Gotta flex on the omnivore dads 💪

My obligatory “I’ve been vegan for seven years and am still not protein deficient” post has new meaning this year with a baby on the way. The health of the dad is directly tied to fetal development and risks of preeclampsia, premature birth rates and much more. Pregnancy is hard enough as it is, and it’s not all on the mom.

Time for dads to take their health more seriously pre, during and post pregnancy to be the best support system for mom that they can be.

Imagine if forests acted like humans? 😭

The forest economy is a wonderful example of how a community can thrive with a proper distribution of resources. Every tree is connected through an underground mycelium network, and the larger trees share resources so the smaller trees can survive. No forest economy can survive without a healthy understory 🌳

Meanwhile, the US economy is increasingly moving away from this model. The wealth gap is exorbitant, with the top 1% owning 1/3 of all wealth while the bottom 50% owns just 2.5%. (SOURCE: CBS). With billionaires and giant corporations finding ways to avoid paying their fair share of taxes, the middle and lower classes will continue to struggle

Throw in pressure from private equity influence, AI + data centers and rising prices for everyday things, it’s only getting more difficult to live a middle class lifestyle

I’m a dangerous man 🔪

I had to take my environmental terror to a new level after learning about this new billion dollar slush fund. I am truly a menace wherever I go, and there’s no one that can stop me!

Want to join the resistance comrade? We’re organizing a trash walk at the local park. I’ll bring GF vegan banana bread 🍌🍞

Mushroom inoculation is coooool 🍄😎⁣

I’ve visited quite a few mushroom farm operations in my day but my favorite method has to be growing in logs. It is traditional to inoculate logs (usually oak) with mushroom spores, and the mushrooms then grow out of the log once the mycelium takes over (usually 6-18 months later) ⏰⁣

In the first two examples, we used mushroom spores in sawdust. We pressed them them into the 1 inch holes we drilled and this mushroom inoculation took was quite helpful and more effective than the funnel 💉⁣

In the last example, the mushroom dowels were very cool. Apparently you can buy pre inoculate mushroom dowels and then hammer them into your logs. Idk which is more effective long term, but it was super fun 🔨⁣

Once the spores have been added to the log, you cover them in a coating of beeswax. This keeps them safe until they’re ready to burst through and “flush”. One log can have many flushes over the course of its life cycle, but patience is key 🔑⁣

Have you grown mushrooms in logs before?⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

When you don’t have any pets to do this trend with 🌿🤦‍♂️😭⁣

I couldn’t resist swinging my staghorn around my living room and this is one of my favorite plants. It loves living in my humid, east facing bathroom, and this guy has just started growing his shield 🥹⁣

Mounted on a plank like this is the best way to get young staghorns (or other epiphytic plants) started, but eventually he will overtake the wood and require something larger. I’ve seen GIANT staghorns hung from heavy duty chains at different botanical gardens, but I’ve got many years before that happens 😅⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Some plants are hungrier than others… 😳⁣

With summer winding down, you might be starting to cut back on your fertilizing routine. That said, if your plant continues to show signs of new growth, don’t be afraid to fertilize a bit in the fall too. Plants get hungry just like us, so don’t be shy about giving them the macro and micronutrients they need is my go to) ✅⁣

BTW - I’m consulting on a theatre set design for a production Little Shop of Horrors and will share the photos once it is live⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Will you animal-free dairy? 🥛 ⁣

As an advisor for Bored Cow, I’ve been helping them make content and this was one of my favorite videos we produced. Talking about issues like the dairy industry and factory farming can be tough, but Cow always seems to get his point across and make people laugh. Anything we can do to combat the dairy industry is a win for me 🛑🐮 ⁣

This is NOT a paid ad btw. I personally invested in this startup with a bunch of other vegan and environmental creators because we all share the same environmental and animal values 🙌🏽⁣

Shoutout to + for the acting⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
