I’m a bit behind on posting all my projects.

I completed the white oak kitchen island. I finished it with non-toxic Rubio Monocoat 2C. The lighter parts are finished with their “Pure” color to highlight the white oak grain but retain a natural color. The dark portions are dyed with a mixture of 1/2 black 1/2 brown first then finished with Pure.

This is the white oak top for the kitchen island. It is one of the largest flat panels I’ve done. Not coincidentally, it also took the most sanding to get it flat and smooth!

Work on the oak kitchen island continues … a bit more gluing and the legs and main frame will be complete and assembled.

My latest completed project is this vanity made of hard maple that Is a much needed upgrade to our guest bath. Every once in a while I have time to build something for our own home!

Lots of gluing going on in the shop today. You can definitely never have enough clamps!

I’m working on two custom vanities. A double vanity in hard maple and a single vanity in oak. The cabinets are just about done. Next will be the bases, then doors and drawers.

The mid century modern chairs and table are complete. They are comfortable and look great.

I finished building the mid-century modern table and chairs and the cushions are being made, so it’s time to move on to staining and finishing. This step must be done right - a poor finish will ruin a beautiful piece.

I started with stain samples; then more; and then a few more. Cherry wood can be very “blotchy” with substantial variations in color and light/dark areas (pic). In this case I settled on Charles Neil’s wood conditioner (a sealer) to control the blotching, a wipe on stain (also helps with blotchy wood), and 3 coats of Waterlox tung oil based finish.

Finishing wood is part science and part art. Charles Neil, who sadly passed way too soon a few years ago, was one of the best at finishing. He was a skilled woodworker and the most expert finisher I have ever found. You can find many of his highly educational videos on youtube.

I had some cherry wood leftover from a recent project, so I decided to build something different - at least for me - a mid century modern piece. The rich orange/salmon tone of the cherry is perfect for the style which used bright, bold colors mixed with earthy tones. I will finish it with tung oil to highlight the grain and retain the cherry tone.

Midcentury modern furniture is characterized by highly functional pieces with simple geometric lines and curves. The design trend started as America emerged from WWII, and was a dominant style from 1945 to 1970. It merged mass production technology from the first half of the 1900s with a clean modern style without the ornamentation of earlier classic furniture styles. Wood was a prominent material of the style, often mixed with glass, metal and upholstery.

This accent table will go in our master bedroom bay window with a couple of comfortable mid century chairs I will build to match - perfect for reading and watching the deer come out of the woods in the evening.

Today I installed the ipe outdoor benches at a local hotel. The long bench is 13’, the other two are both 6’. The hotel is in the finishing stages of construction; they will look very nice with the planned landscaping and courtyard furniture.

Ipe is beautiful and extremely weather resistant. Even untreated it will last 50+ years outdoors. I treated these with a special outdoor oil to highlight the grain and natural color.
