๐ŸŒฟMoss is a highly underestimated plant that offers significant environmental benefits.

Studies show that moss-covered areas can store billions of tons more carbon than bare ground, making moss a powerful tool for carbon capture.

Unlike most plants, moss thrives without soil and can grow on walls, roofs, and other urban surfaces, making it ideal for greening cities.

In urban areas, moss helps cool temperatures through evaporation and can absorb pollutants like COโ‚‚ and fine dust, improving air quality.

It also supports biodiversity and aids in rainwater retention. Despite these advantages, moss is often removed during construction or landscaping due to aesthetic preferences.

Embracing moss in city design could play a crucial role in tackling climate change, reducing pollution, and creating healthier living spaces.๐ŸŒฟ

Sometimes we work on a project that just hits different...

We are always excited about every new project, but we love it when it takes shape better than we even imagined!

This was definitely one of those projects and we can't wait to go back and transform the other side of the house! ๐ŸŒฟ

One thing we are incredibly particular about at BL Landscapes is soil.

People often focus on the plants, pavers, walls or lighting, but healthy landscapes truly begin underground. If the soil isn't right, nothing else will ever reach its full potential.

For almost 20 years, we have used the planting mix from Mailliardโ€™s Landing Nursery in virtually every project we build, and after all these years we can confidently say we have never found anything better.

It is rich, soft, loamy, healthy, w**d free, and absolutely incredible for growing perennials, shrubs and trees. The texture alone tells you immediately that itโ€™s different from the average planting soil. Plants establish faster, root systems thrive, and gardens simply perform better long term.

What makes it even more impressive is that itโ€™s made locally using green methods right here in Oak Harbor. The soil is regularly tested for proper pH levels and carefully sterilized through a high-heat composting process, helping ensure a clean, healthy growing medium.

We trust it enough that it is the planting mix we use in ALL of our projects. Every garden bed we build starts with this foundation because we believe quality landscapes deserve quality soil.

A beautiful garden starts from the ground up, and in our opinion, this is the best soil around. ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸŒฟ 8 Beautiful Plants Deer Usually Leave Alone ๐ŸฆŒ

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, chances are you've experienced the frustration of planting something beautiful only to have deer turn it into an overnight snack bar.

While no plant is completely deer-proof, there are some that deer consistently avoid. Whether it's because of their fragrance, texture, or taste, these plants can help you create a beautiful garden that stands a much better chance against browsing deer.

๐ŸŒฟ Nepeta (Catmint) A long-blooming perennial covered in purple-blue flowers from late spring through fall. Its fragrant foliage is highly attractive to pollinators but typically unappealing to deer.

๐ŸŒธ Foxglove One of the most iconic cottage garden plants. Their towering flower spikes bring incredible height and color to the garden, and all parts of the plant are toxic, making them a poor choice for deer snacks.

๐Ÿ’œ Lavender Known for its soothing fragrance and drought tolerance, lavender thrives in sunny locations and is one of the most reliable deer-resistant plants available.

๐Ÿ’™ Russian Sage Clouds of lavender-blue flowers and silvery foliage make this a standout in summer gardens. Deer generally avoid its aromatic leaves, while bees and butterflies absolutely love it.

๐ŸŒน Hellebore Often called the Lenten Rose, hellebores provide evergreen foliage and beautiful blooms during the colder months when little else is flowering. Deer rarely bother them.

๐ŸŒฟ Lamb's Ear Soft, fuzzy silver foliage gives this plant its name. While people love touching it, deer tend to avoid the unusual texture.

๐ŸŒพ Ornamental Grasses From feather reed grass to blue oat grass and fountain grass, ornamental grasses add movement, texture, and year-round interest while generally remaining low on a deer's menu.

๐ŸŒบ Rhododendron A Pacific Northwest favorite. While young plants may occasionally experience some browsing, established rhododendrons are often left alone and provide spectacular spring color.

๐ŸฆŒ A Few Words of Caution No plant is completely deer-proof. If deer are hungry enough, they'll sample almost anything. However, incorporating deer-resistant plants into your landscape can significantly reduce damage and help create a garden that remains beautiful throughout the season.

What's been your experience? Which plants do the deer leave alone in your garden? We'd love to hear your recommendations! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ˜Š

Milkw**d is one of those plants that reminds us that a garden can be so much more than just beautiful!๐ŸŒฟ

With its unique flowers, incredible fragrance, and ability to attract pollinators by the hundreds, milkw**d plays a huge role in supporting the ecosystem around us. Most importantly, it is the host plant for monarch butterflies, meaning monarchs lay their eggs on it and their caterpillars rely on it to survive.

Itโ€™s amazing to think that something as simple as adding a few plants to your garden can help support one of natureโ€™s most beautiful creatures.

And beyond its purpose, milkw**d has a wild, natural beauty that fits perfectly into Pacific Northwest cottage gardens, meadow plantings, and pollinator landscapes. Watching bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds constantly moving through it brings a garden to life in a completely different way.

Sometimes the best gardens are the ones that give something back. ๐Ÿ˜Š

One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is time in the garden!

Not because they'll learn how to plant flowers or pull w**ds... but because gardening teaches lessons that stay with them for life.

Patience.
Creativity.
Hard work.
Appreciation for nature.
The joy of creating something with their own hands.

A garden slows life down in the best possible way. It creates space for conversations, laughter, muddy hands, and memories that will last forever.

Some of my favorite memories are connected to being outside working in the soil, and watching kids experience that same excitement today is something really special.

They learn that beautiful things take time.
That growth doesn't happen overnight.
And that caring for something consistently matters.

In a world full of screens and distractions, gardening brings families back together in a simple and meaningful way.

Plant the flowers.
Dig the holes.
Let them make a mess.

Years from now, they probably won't remember what toy they got that summer... but they'll remember planting that garden with you. ๐ŸŒฑโค๏ธ
