Ever wonder what the crew is actually doing when they drag that long board across fresh concrete? That's screeding, also called striking off.

Right after the pour, a long straightedge is pulled across the wet concrete to cut off the excess and fill in low spots as the crew works their way across the pad. It brings the whole surface to the right height before any floating or final finishing begins.

It isn't the finished product, but it's the step that sets up everything that comes after.

How do you move a large slab without wrapping straps around it? We recently featured this tool in our last video and figured we'd tell ya a little more about it!

This vacuum lifter grips the surface using suction, allowing our excavator to lift the piece while our crew guides it into position. It’s lifting from the face of the slab rather than grabbing it with forks or clamps.

The lifting power might surprise you. Some of these systems have configurations rated for up to 6,000 pounds on compatible nonporous materials. The actual capacity depends on the suction pad and equipment setup.

Material matters, too. That system is designed for products such as granite, bluestone, natural stone, and wet-cast concrete, but it isn’t intended for dry-cast manufactured products. It’s not simply a matter of attaching it to any surface and lifting.

For our custom installations, equipment like this takes on the heavy lifting while our crew handles the measuring, alignment, and final placement. The machine moves the slab. The craftsmanship brings it all together.

Every front entry is different, so the work should be too.

For this project, the team cut custom slabs specifically for the space, then used vacuum lifting equipment and our excavator to safely place each large piece exactly where it needed to go.

From the first cut to the final alignment, every detail is measured around the home, the entryway, and the finished look the homeowner envisioned.
