20+ years running a growing 7-figure electrical company.

Wiring isn't the hard part.

That may surprise some people.

Most problems on jobsites aren't technical failures. They're breakdowns in expectations. Someone assumed instead of asking.

Someone didn't speak up early.
Someone waited too long to raise their hand.

The hard part is planning. Communication. Coordination. Making sure the right people are in the right place with the right information at the right time.

When projects struggle it's rarely because someone didn't know how to do the work. It's because the work around the work wasn't handled well.

That's why leadership systems and people matter just as much as technical skill.

I was a slave driver.

Drove people out as fast as I could bring them in.

If someone on my crew messed something up, everyone on the job knew it. I was in the field every day. Driving hard. Getting the job done. And if you couldn't keep up, I made sure you heard about it.

Some people could handle it.

Most couldn't.

I didn't hire because I was afraid I couldn't pay them. I undercharged because I wanted to stay busy. I turned away customers because I was stretched too thin but refused to bring on help.

I wanted to talk to every customer. Show up personally. Save the day.

Me. Not the company.

That works at a million.

It breaks at seven.

What I'd tell the old Dave: bring people on. Train them. Build them up before you knock them down. Raise your rates so you can actually serve your customers.

$1.6 million to $7.3 million in three years. Not because I got better at doing everything myself.

Because I finally stopped.

2 journeymen applied. 90 people applied for apprentice.

We posted a few job listings before Christmas. That's what came back.

Not a hiring problem. A pipeline crisis.

In Connecticut the apprentice-to-journeyman ratio is one to one early on. Can't bring on more apprentices without licensed electricians to supervise them.

90 people want to learn the trade. Nowhere to put them.

Nationally, for every 5 electricians retiring this year, only 2 are entering. The workforce is projected to shrink 14% by 2030 while demand jumps 25%.

I've got 20 employees. Trying to get to 30 by year end.

The bottleneck isn't people who want to work. It's licensed electricians who can train them.

Other states have looser ratios. More flexibility. Easier to build a pipeline.

Connecticut makes it harder than it needs to be.

I'm not saying lower the standards.

I'm saying the system needs to let contractors build the next generation faster. Because right now we've got 90 people knocking on the door.

And only room to let 2 of them in.

I was on LinkedIn for 15 years and never posted. I'm 18 months in. The change in my business has nothing to do with this app. The change in who reaches out to me has everything to do with it.

I built D.B. Lunt the old way.

2007. One client. A buddy who needed electrical work. The 2008 crash. Dennis Hatch as my first employee. Word of mouth.

For 15 years I had a LinkedIn account. Logged in maybe four times. Profile picture was 10 years old.

18 months ago my team told me I needed to be visible.

I didn't see the point. We were already growing. $1.6 million to $7.3 million.

But I posted anyway.

Here's what changed.

The business didn't change. We were already on the trajectory.

What changed was who reaches out to me. People I'd never met. Contractors. A woman in California with a question about generators. Other owners asking how I scaled.

The work was already there. The conversations weren't.

If you're a small business owner and you've been telling yourself LinkedIn isn't for you, here's my honest take.

It probably isn't going to change your business. Yours is changing because of what you're already doing.

It might change who you get to talk to about it.

Proud to give back to the community that supports us! 🐾💡

Our team at D.B. Lunt Electrical Contractors had the absolute honor of donating our electrical services to the Montville Animal Control for their new K-9 Barrett Memorial Garden. We installed power for a beautiful water fountain and set up low-voltage landscape lighting to help create a peaceful, reflective space for remembrance.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to support an organization that does incredible work for our local animals.

🗓️ Mark your calendars: Join us for the grand opening this Saturday, June 13th!

$2.8 million job. Not enough guys to finish it.

I called the electricians I'd been treating like competition for 15 years.

Biggest project I'd ever taken on. Couldn't staff it with my crew alone.

For 15 years I'd seen every other electrician as competition. Every contractor on a job I didn't get was money out of my pocket.

Then I was standing on a project I was about to lose.

And I called them.

Subcontracted other electrical companies to help me finish.

It felt like admitting I wasn't big enough.

Turned out it was the smartest thing I'd ever done.

I modeled it after how unions staff big projects. One company can't do it alone. So you build a bench. A network you can call when the job is bigger than your payroll.

That $2.8 million job didn't just save the company.

It gave me the confidence to go after a $5 million contract the next year. Because now I had a system.

Not just a crew.

A woman from California messaged me about generators three months ago. I run an electrical company in rural Connecticut. We were on the phone for 45 minutes. I had nothing to sell her.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

For 15 years my business existed in a 30-mile radius. Word of mouth. My wife knowing somebody. The gas station guy.

I didn't advertise. I didn't post. I didn't exist online.

18 months ago my team convinced me to start showing up on LinkedIn.

I didn't have anything to sell to anyone outside Connecticut. I still don't.

But that one call changed how I think about reach.

If somebody three time zones away decided I was worth 45 minutes, the people three streets away probably did too. They just never reached out.

Or maybe they did. And I didn't notice.

The hard part isn't getting noticed.

The hard part is realizing you were always worth noticing.

Knowledgeable. Motivational. Fearless. Dependable. Honest. Driven. Ambitious. (And a leader who always believes in his team!) We had some of our team members each write one word to describe Dave.

Happy Birthday to our CEO, Dave! We’re grateful for your leadership and vision every single day. Hope it’s a great one! 🎂🔌

Transforming Taftville, one project at a time 💪

Over the last five years, our team has helped bring nearly 350 units to life within a quarter-mile radius.

From pushing through a tough winter on our newest 66-unit build to wiring 10,000+ feet of conduit in the historic 150-unit mill conversion (complete with an indoor pickleball court), we are incredibly proud of the footprint we’re leaving here.
