speeed square (noun)
/pronounced: “speed” but with one extra e for legal protection*
1. A triangular layout tool used by carpenters to mark 90° and 45° lines, measure angles, guide saw cuts, and demonstrate that you are absolutely, definitely not referring to any specific product.
2. The totally generic, definitely-not-branded cousin of the square that helps keep your cuts straight and your legal exposure crooked.
3. A precision instrument primarily used to ensure that your framing is square, your lines are clean, and your attorney remains unnecessary.

Example usage:
“Hand me the speeed square — the one that keeps the cuts tight and the cease-and-desists loose.”

Owning vs. Renting — we all want ownership, we want to have our name on stuff, but do you ACTUALLY need to own it or can you rent it? I’ve had cases where it made sense and others where I remind myself I’m a bit stupid in decision making.

Turning a shipping container into a tiny house has been on my list of to-do’s for a long time. Everyone has said it’s stupid, but I’m only 29 once and I want to build something unique. We managed to tuck this 20’ container into the trees, facing miles and miles of mountain range through the oaks, it’s going to be something else to wake up here..

Anything we should include in this? Open to suggestions!

What makes a “good” house? Is it the finishes? Who thinks about the framing once it’s all covered up? Most people don’t. Our next build is with LVL, LSL and other engineered materials. While the framing gets covered, it’s the core of a home.

This is a local framer to me, building high quality homes. Whether they’re passing inspection or not, I can’t answer.

1,400 SF house? That doesn’t mean 1,400 SF of roof sheathing. Not even close. Your roof area grows the moment you introduce pitch. The steeper the roof, the more square footage you actually have to cover.

The dimensions tool we use in gets you the numbers you need, if I had the full roof plan I’d factor each slope individually — 2/12 on the lower sections and 20/12 on the steeper parts. This is purely for example while I was making notes on our house. I’ll show this in depth when we get our roof plan complete.

The math behind it is the Pythagorean theorem and it’s quite easy to calculate.

Roof Footprint SF × Pitch Multiplier = Actual Roof SF

Use these multipliers based on your roof pitch:

1/12 → 1.00
2/12 → 1.01
3/12 → 1.03
4/12 → 1.05
5/12 → 1.1
6/12 → 1.12
7/12 → 1.16
8/12 → 1.2
9/12 → 1.25
10/12 → 1.3
11/12 → 1.35
12/12 → 1.41

Would you rather see your lead guy sitting around or cleaning up? If there isn’t something to do, grab a broom and help keep the place decent. The same could be said about other trades, learn how to set a window, a door, siding, or whatever other trade you can absorb. When the economy turns down, work slows and only those that are valuable stay busy.

Name drop! Who’s got the raddest, most innovative products? We’re exploring a million options.. When you think of a truly custom home, what brand comes to mind?

Do you believe this? Dowsing Rods help locate water underneath the ground for our well. We hit in the driveway, looks like it runs across the front of the property! Never seen this done before, had to come out and watch it happen first hand.

It clicked the other day that I’ll be building a 32’ tall single family residence soon. A-Frames are so impractical, but they allow me as a carpenter to have fun building it, and allow me to flex a bit showing what we know as craftsmen. 34’ LVL rafters on a 24/12 pitch, floor to ridge, this is the first house in years I’ve been “excited” for. These rafters will weigh something like 200 # a piece, glad I’ve been in the gym lately!

We’re also in a WUI area, we’ve got a lot of wildfires, which is a challenge in itself. Vulcan vents are utilized a lot, or non vented assemblies. Fire retardant wood products are acceptable, but often times fiber cement panels are the go to. A lot of research, a lot of planning! All of these things have to be dialed in during preconstruction, thankful to be working with a great team at , engineering by Element Engineering.

This place is the reason Avery’s still alive with us today. It was the worst time of our lives, but looking back I can’t thank this place enough for what they did for our family. Avery’s open heart surgery was performed out here after a life flight from our hospital out on the coast. She fought a blood infection after surgery and spent what felt like forever sedated, IV’s, PICC lines, chest tubes and blood transfusions became our new normal.

Life has a way of reminding us of things. My next project is our cabin, and we pass this hospital every time on our way up into the mountains. It’s a reminder that our time here is limited and what truly matters are those around us. I was a rich man the second we walked out of that hospital together. None of it would have been possible without the support we had from family, friends, VCH staff, the endless thoughts and prayers from those around us during what was one of our most uncertain times in life.
