Great presentation on some of our natural history in Garrett County!

From ancient forests to modern-day wildlife, Garrett County's natural history has quite a story to tell! 🌲

Garrett College Professor of Natural Resources & Wildlife Technology Kevin Dodge took attendees on a journey through thousands of years of Garrett County's changing landscape during October's Joan Crawford Lecture Series presentation, *What Meshach Saw: The Presettlement Flora & Fauna of Garrett County*.

Dodge explored how researchers use preserved pollen, historical records, and other evidence to uncover the region's past, while highlighting the lasting impacts of industrial logging and the remarkable recovery of local wildlife populations, including black bears, wild turkeys, river otters, and fishers.

Thank you to Professor Dodge and everyone who joined us for another fascinating evening of local history and discovery! 🌿

It's always a bluebird day at Camp Hickory, and it's always a great day to teach in the woods! We had a great time this morning at the Fall Envirothon Training at the Hickory Environmental Education Center working with students from Northern and Southern High Schools on Forestry measurements and tree ID. Envirothon is an environmental competition where students receive hands-on training from Natural Resources professionals in Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, Aquatics, and current-issue topics. Teams are tested on their knowledge and skills in the Spring, where the victorious team will go on to represent Garrett County in the Maryland Envirothon. It's a great program and one of the best ways to cultivate the next generation of Foresters, Biologists, and Soil Scientists. Next year's National Envirothon will be hosted in Maryland at Mt. St. Mary's College in Frederick County in July of 2027. For more information on the program, visit www.mdenvirothon.org. Special thanks to our teachers and the staff at Hickory who make this program happen - and scheduled great weather!
