Waterloov Gutter Protection System

Waterloov Gutter Protection System RK Industries was founded in 1989 and has since provided customers with the utmost satisfaction for gutter guards. R. to make it an enclosed unit. in Neptune NJ.

K Industries trading as Waterloov has been manufacturing gutter protection products since 1989. The double row louvered gutter cover product, WaterloovÆ, was invented, developed and brought to market in Red Bank, NJ. The first patent was granted to Robert Carey in the early 80's. The preferred embodiment of the original patent was for an all-in-one product and contained provisions for it to be man

ufactured in different components which allows existing gutters to become part of the invention. In the early 90's the product transformed into a gutter cover that attaches to existing gutters and also integrates with the roofing. Improvement patents were granted to Richard Kuhns in the early 90's and the product was named the WaterloovÆ Gutter Protection System--now known as the WaterloovÆ Premier gutter protector. Headquarters were located at 210 Broad St, Red Bank and have remained there until late in 2004 when it was relocated to 1525 B Corlies Ave. Over the years, fourteen patents have been issued to Richard Kuhns covering variations in design, alternative products, and more recently methods of collecting valley water. The product named, Valley FallTM was brought to market in the late 90's and has demonstrated to be the most effective method of collecting valley water available. History of performance and warranty history:
In the beginning, there were no performance warranties or maintenance methods available. The product was only available in raw aluminum--no other colors. With the opportunity to install the product in very heavily treed areas, performance could be monitored. Video taped and photographic visual inspections were performed every 6 months for the first two years for a selected number of installations after which the inspection schedule went to a yearly inspection. Early inspection results were:

1. No more than 1/16" accumulation of debris in any gutters. This never changed over the years. Conclusion: The Waterloov system is self governing--what little debris enters the gutter is constantly flushed through the system. This is because as the water enters the gutter it cause a swirling action which constantly moves any tiny debris to prevent accumulation.

2. In heavily debris conditions, even though there was no significant accumulation inside the gutter, debris did accumulate on the outside of the louvers after a year of exposure. We experimented with hosing the debris from the louvers and brushing. Conclusion: Brushing was easily accomplished with a telescopic pole and a light weight brush with stiff bristles. As opposed to being a dirty job as happens with the type of gutters that can be dumped from the ground with a hooking mechanism, maintaining Waterloov is basically clean non sweating procedure--so easy that we named it suit and tie maintenance. Routine inspections of installations ceased as the results were all the same--open unclogging gutters. The only clogging ever observed was because of a few basic oversights in installations. they were:

1. End caps that were not completely closed which allowed birds to enter. To correct this, improvements including the installations of bird shields were instituted in every new installation.

2. One time a clogged gutter was found to have a drop tube that was not flush with the bottom of the gutter, but instead raised approximately 1/2" which served as a damn in the gutter that collected debris. To correct this, inspection of all drop tubes was added to the installation instructions and to correct whenever found.

3. Protectors that were damaged by fallen tree limbs were found to pass sufficient debris to clog. To correct this, we began producing a newsletter to customers.

4. Roofing contractors often crushed the system when installing the new roofing, or if they removed the system they either didn't clean the gutter before reinstalling or reinstalled the system incorrectly with missing end caps, or flattened vertical louvers. Flattened vertical louvers most often meant that the roofer nailed the panels into the roofing (which meant that they had to be sheared out to repair). To correct this, we issue a warning to all customers of these possible problems encouraging them to have the gutter covers removed by the installing company and then reinstalled after the new roof is finished. In the mid 90's our company issued a life-time performance warranty. Our inspections were limited to installations where new roofing was to be installed or repairs were required for fallen tree limb damage. Some service calls were for water leakage into the home. In every complaint of that type, roofing problems were found to cause the problem. These problems were from a variety of sources:
1. leaking sky lights
2. holes punched in the roofing from fallen tree limbs
3. Old nail holes in the roofing to fasten loose shingles, attach antennas...
4. Inadequate roof package. The plywood that is supposed to extend over top of the fascia board was found to be short and did not extend to the fascia board.
5. Low pitched roofs which were installed with standard seal tab shingles instead of roll roofing or a rubber roof. In this case, high wind conditions blew the water up under shingles where it found a way into the home. Summary: After rigorous visual inspections continually providing essentially debris free gutters, we offered our first performance warranty for 10 years and when it comes to keeping gutters clean and free flowing, WaterloovÆ has been the most effective gutter protection ever invented. Where competitors have eliminated lifetime performance warranties, WaterloovÆ has initiated the strongest manufacturer backed lifetime warranty in the business. Colors: In the early 90's brown and white was added to the raw mill finish product. By the mid 90's ten other popular colors were available and the product was available in three different widths, 7 1/2" for new construction, 9" (the original width), 11 3/4" width (universal panel as it can be sheared for first course installation or is sufficient in width to go under the second course of shingles) and 15" width to reach second course of extra wide shingles. Design Change: The original WaterloovÆ Premiere panel contained rectangular louvers with an opening of 7/8" in width. In 1994 to facilitate production demand and improve the visual appeal of the product, the truncated double row louvered WaterloovÆ Signature panel was brought to the marketplace. A design patent was issued to Richard Kuhns. While there is no known difference in the performance of these two products, 99+% of all customers prefer the new design to the original rectangular design. (photo of old one and photo of new one)

Valley Treatments:
The one challenge was to collect valley water. Up until the mid 90's the only method we had was with the use of diverters--a combination of solid wall and perforated wall openings to distribute the water along the louvered collectors. In the mid 90's we experimented with a method of spreading and collecting the water in the valley before it reached the waterloovÆ system. A patent was issued to Richard Kuhns, in the late 90's for the award winning Valley-Fall Product which is the most effective method ever invented for collecting valley water. Waterloov became the first company and is still the only company to offer viable valley treatments that don't damn up debris from leaving the roof. History of Leadership:
Richard Kuhns B.S.Ch. E. is the founder and company president until 2004 when the company relocated to Neptune NJ at which time George Zaragoso was given the task of running the company. George comes the company with an extensive background in corporate development. Dealerships: The first entrepreneur to become a dealer in the early 90's and still is a dealer is Avery Frost of Bergen County, NJ. Since that time WaterloovÆ has spread clear across the country with dealers from Maine to Oregon and from Georgia to California. Click here for more information

Manufacture: From the early 90's to late 2003, all manufacture was outsourced. With the recent move to a far better facility for inventory, shipping, and receiving, Waterloov began it's own manufacturing facility. Only 10% of our production is outsourced. A new improved production line is being designed for delivery in the first quarter of 2006. The new production line will be capable of producing 50 panels (150 linear feet--one box of product) per minute. Corporate Name Change: Through the 90's and into 2003, the corporate name has been Waterloov Roof Siding, and Gutter Protection Co. INC manufacture of Waterloov, Care-Free, and Niagara gutter covers. To minimize confusion, in 2003, the corporate name was changed to R.K. Industries INC. Waterloov, Care-Free, and Niagara are now divisions of the main company. Other products:
Often prospective customers would compare the WaterloovÆ product to inferior designed products--a technology of the 50's. Waterloov brought comparable products to the market place. First was the vinyl and aluminum single row Care-FreeTM System to compete with other inferior products and later on the Niagara system to compete with strictly fin type of hoods.

Getting a new roof? Make sure you take precautions before letting a roofer destroy your current gutter guards.

Roofers and gutter guards don't mix just as vinegar and oil don't mix. It's rare that you'll find a roofer than knows how to deal with the more sophisticated gutter guards.
