What is thermal expansion in plumbing?
Water expands as it heats. In a closed system, that extra volume has nowhere to go, so pressure rises inside the water heater and pipes.
Why is my water heater pressure relief valve leaking?
Intermittent dripping during a heating cycle often means thermal expansion, not a failed valve. Constant dripping can also mean high street pressure or a worn valve.
Do I need an expansion tank in California?
If your home has a PRV, backflow preventer, or check valve, the system is closed and expansion control is required. Many Oceanside and North County homes fall in that category.
