Before hiring a irrigation Contractor, Read This first.
In Texas, irrigation work is regulated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). This exists to protect both property owners and the public water supply.
Unfortunately, there are many unlicensed contractors installing irrigation systems at very low prices. While the upfront cost may seem appealing, these systems are often installed incorrectly and end up costing more in the long run.
Common issues we see with unlicensed work include:
• Systems installed without properly checking PSI (pressure) and GPM (flow rate)
• Too many sprinkler heads placed on a single zone, resulting in poor pressure and uneven coverage
• Inefficient layouts that waste water and leave dry areas
• Removal or failure to install backflow prevention devices, which are required by law to protect drinking water from contamination
Backflow devices are not optional. They are mandated by Texas code, and removing or bypassing them is both unsafe and illegal.
Property owners should also be aware that installing irrigation systems without a license can result in fines and penalties enforced by TCEQ.
Before hiring any irrigation contractor, you should:
• Ask for their Texas Irrigator License Number
• Verify that the license number is displayed on their vehicle or company materials
• Ensure they are designing the system based on proper hydraulic calculations (PSI and GPM)
• Confirm that all required components, including backflow prevention, are installed correctly
A properly designed irrigation system is not just about putting heads in the ground—it is about managing water efficiently, protecting your investment, and staying compliant with state regulations.
At O-Tex Irrigation, LLC, we take pride in doing the job correctly, in compliance with Texas law, and to a professional standard that protects both your property and your water system.
