As we prepare for below-freezing temperatures in the Tampa Bay area, please adhere to the following precautions to avoid a potential issue with freezing water in pools. Keep in mind, ice takes up more space than water, so if pool water freezes in pipes or pool equipment, it could cause serious damage to plumbing or make equipment shut down….

1) If you have power, it is best to run the pump on a continual basis during freezing conditions (below 32 degrees F). The water staying in motion will decrease the chances of water freezing in pipes or pool equipment which could cause damage.

2) ONLY IF THERE IS A POWER OUTAGE: Hayward Pool Products makes the following recommendation: 1. Turn off all breakers to pool equipment. 2. Once power is off, remove the drain plugs from ALL of your swimming pool equipment. This includes pumps, filters, heaters and sanitization equipment. Unplug and remove Salt Chlorine Generator Cells from the system if able. 3. Leave power to your swimming pool equipment turned off until any ice that has formed has naturally melted in order to help prevent damaging your swimming pool equipment once you restore power. 4. Once the ice has naturally melted and you are ready to resume operation, re-install all drains and salt chlorine generator cells. Then restore power to your swimming pool equipment.

This is a rare occurrence in this area so please take the following precautions to make sure no serious damage is done to your pool equipment.

Some hurricane advice for pool owners: DO NOT drain your swimming pool to prepare for the storm! With rain and storm surge comes a surge in ground water levels. If your pool is empty and the ground water underneath it is high, your pool can pop out of the ground if there's not enough weight in it. On behalf of our team at Landmark we hope everyone stays safe this weekend.
