Throwback Thursday

Back to 2015, Al Slattery Masonry completed Brickopolis in Oklahoma City, OK. This project was unique given the proximity to the Bricktown Canal, with only 7' between the building and the canal we were still able to complete it safely and on time for our valued customer.

Workforce Wednesday

School is back in session, and that means the masonry shop at Mid-Del Technology Center is back to work!

This year, 23 students are enrolled in the masonry program, and we’re excited to see what the year has in store. We look forward to watching the second-year students continue building on the skills they learned last year and seeing how the first-year students take to the trade.

We’re especially excited to see five students who worked with ASMI over the summer returning for their second year at Mid-Del. Getting the opportunity to work in the field and then take that experience back into the classroom and shop is what career-tech education is all about.

We’re proud to continue supporting Mid-Del Technology Center and the next generation of the masonry workforce.

Today we’re recognizing ASMI Foreman Jason Mechling, who recently passed the 15-year mark with ASMI!

Over the past 15 years, Jason has become a great member of our team and someone we can count on to take ownership of his projects and get the job done. He brings years of experience and dedication to the field every day and while he can be a little hard-headed from time to time (haha), that determination is also part of what makes Jason who he is.

We appreciate all of Jason’s hard work and the effort he puts in day in and day out. Congratulations on 15 years, Jason!

Masonry Monday

Today we are highlighting the continued progress our team is making at the DEQ Project for Lingo Construction Services.

Our exterior scope includes approximately 7,000 square feet of Acme Brick Company brick veneer and 4,500 square feet of Arriscraft Arriscraft CSMU, with exterior veneer reaching elevations of nearly 100 feet.

The team, led by ASMI Foreman Jared Bassett, recently completed approximately 16,000 CMU throughout the project and has now transitioned to the exterior veneer. Working at these elevations while managing the logistics on a tight site of a multi-story project takes planning, coordination, and a strong focus on safety.

We appreciate the hard work Jared and the entire ASMI crew continue to put into this project and our continued partnership with Lingo Construction.

Throwback Thursday - Pelican Bay Aquatic Center, Edmond, OK (2001)

In 2001, Al Slattery Masonry completed the construction of the Pelican Bay Aquatic Center in Edmond, OK. At the time, it was considered a state-of-the-art facility, designed to serve the growing Edmond community for many years to come.

The scope of work included the use of architectural CMU (concrete masonry units) and glass blocks, which were strategically placed to allow for the maximum amount of natural light to the interior spaces, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

The project was a fast-paced, and one of the key innovations that helped ensure its timely completion was the use of the newly invented Grout Hog. This piece of equipment was a game-changer at the time, improving efficiency and streamlining the grouting process, something that was vital for keeping up with the pace of the job.

Today, Pelican Bay Aquatic Center remains a beloved community landmark, showcasing the lasting impact of quality craftsmanship and forward-thinking design.

Masonry Monday

This week, we’re highlighting the teamwork and coordination underway at the Tulsa County Courthouse with General Contractor JE Dunn Construction.

When the project schedule required acceleration through no fault of anyone involved, JE Dunn reached out to ASMI to see if we could help accelerate the project. To meet the manpower and schedule needs of the project, we reached out to our friends at MidWest Masonry, a fellow member of our peer group with Performance Construction Advisors, to work alongside our team and help keep the project moving forward.

The scope consists of approximately 75,000 half-modular brick, all scheduled to be installed during an accelerated five-week period.

This project comes with some unique logistical challenges:

Nighttime masonry operations
A tight downtown Tulsa jobsite
Tower crane-only access
Every brick cut to size off site
A nine-story building completely scaffolded with system scaffold
An extremely quick mobilization following approval of the pricing by the Tulsa County Commissioners

Despite those challenges, the combined ASMI and MidWest Masonry team has worked through the logistics flawlessly. Led by ASMI Foreman Jason Mechling, the crews have done a great job coordinating manpower, materials, access, and production to meet an aggressive schedule safely and efficiently.

We appreciate MidWest Masonry stepping up to work alongside our team and JE Dunn for the coordination necessary to make an accelerated project like this successful.

A is for Apprentice.

An apprentice is someone learning the masonry trade through hands on experience under the guidance of our skilled craftsmen. As a full-service masonry contractor specializing in brick, CMU, cast stone, and stonework, we know that quality craftsmanship starts with quality training. Our apprentices work alongside experienced masons learning proper techniques, safety practices, and the attention to detail that goes into every project we build.

Here at ASMI we run our own in house Apprentice Program, giving our apprentices hands on training and mentorship to help them grow into skilled masons. Investing in the next generation of masons is investing in the future of our trade.
