Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma is known for its 500-million-year-old granite formations. Floyd Freeman, a civil engineer with the WPA—a New Deal program created by President Roosevelt in 1935 to generate jobs through public works—built the road up Mount Scott in the 1930s. The photo shows Floyd, my grandfather. I knew he was involved in building the three-mile road, but I recently discovered that we share an interest in the large granite slab at Mount Scott's base. I've admired this slab since childhood, and Floyd had chosen it nearly forty years before he placed it. -
