The Summer of ’26 is making a run at one of the toughest on our lawn and landscapes. Most of the Oklahoma City metro area has topped 4 weeks with out a good rainfall (1/4” or more) while the number of 100+ days keep adding up.

Summer in the transition zone (area where you can grow both warm season and cool season grass) is always a challenge for fescue, but when temperatures climb in the 100s and rainfall disappears, it is also a challenge for bermuda and your landscape plants.

After a run of 7 consecutive days with temperatures in the 100s, this weekend’s temperatures in the low to mid 90s was a welcome reprieve!

Let’s face it: I’m hot! You’re hot! And your lawn and landscape are hot too!

The last 10 days of July and the first 10 days of August on average are Oklahoma City’s hottest days and this year we are putting an exclamation point on the HOT!

We are visiting a lot of lawns and landscapes that are suffering from either heat stress, drought stress or both. Even the best lawns and landscapes have a spot or two, a plant or two, that is in distress after a week of 100s.

The key to surviving the heat and drought stress is having a habit of best practices all year round. It's not just during times of high stress that these habits matter, but rather it's best practices all the time that make the real difference. Turf and plants that are doing their best right now have a strong and healthy root system.

It’s late July and we find ourselves deep into a typical summer Oklahoma weather pattern…hot and dry!

Temperatures have become more and more consistent in the upper 90’s to low 100’s while rainfall has become less and less consistent and scattered. Parts of the Oklahoma City metro are going on 3 weeks without a good rain fall while other parts of the metro have received a ¼” or more rainfall within the past week.
Heat and drought impact all types of turfgrass making summertime in Oklahoma hard on all lawns. Even so, Oklahoma is blessed to be in the transition zone where you can choose between a warm season lawn or a cool season lawn.
