A utility doesn't have to cross an entire property to create a problem.

Some of the easiest lines to overlook are the ones serving something nearby—a light pole, detached building, gate, sign, irrigation system, or piece of equipment.

Those privately owned lines may never appear on a public utility locate.

That's why the area immediately around a planned excavation deserves attention too.
Before digging, look at what the property is telling you.

Sometimes the clue is sitting only a few feet away.

Two core locations can be only a few feet apart and still be completely different scans.
One may have plenty of room.

The next may have rebar, conduit, post-tension tendons, or multiple embedded features crossing the planned opening.

That's why scanning one area doesn't tell you what's happening everywhere else in the slab.
Concrete scanning is specific to the area where the work is actually planned.

Before drilling or saw cutting begins, scan where you're going to work—not just somewhere nearby.

Plumbing emergencies don't always stop at the pipe.

A failed sewer line under a concrete floor may mean the plumber needs to open the slab, and quickly.

But before the saw comes out, there's another question:

What else is inside that concrete?

Rebar, electrical conduit, post-tension cables, and other embedded features may cross the exact path needed for the repair.

That's where we can help.

Echo GPR can scan the proposed work area before cutting begins, helping the plumbing crew get the information they need without turning one emergency into two.

Every project has at least one opening that looks easy on paper.

“Just put the core right here.”

Then you scan the concrete.

Rebar.
Conduit.
More rebar.

And suddenly “right here” becomes “how about three inches that way?”

Sometimes a small adjustment before drilling saves everyone a much bigger conversation afterward.

Have a safe weekend!

Good GPR work isn't about promising that a scanner can see everything underground.

It can't.

Depth, soil conditions, moisture, reinforcing density, material properties, site access and the target itself can all affect what GPR can detect.

That doesn't make the technology less useful.

It makes experienced interpretation more important.

A good technician knows what the equipment is showing—and understands when site conditions may limit the information available.

We'd rather explain those limitations clearly than give a project team confidence the data doesn't support.

Because useful information starts with knowing what you know and what you don't.

Underground utilities don't always stay politely separated.

On developed sites, years of additions and repairs can leave electrical, communications, water, gas, irrigation and other services packed into the same area.

Now put a new trench through it.

That’s when knowing that “a utility is nearby” may not be enough.

Crews need as much useful information as possible about where detected utilities appear to travel so they can plan excavation around existing infrastructure.

The more congested the site, the less room there is for assumptions.

Need to make an opening through an elevated concrete slab?

Depending on the project and site access, it may be necessary to scan the concrete from the underside. The same basic question still applies: what could be inside the concrete before drilling or saw cutting begins?

Reinforcing steel, conduit, post-tension tendons, and other embedded features may be present even though there’s nothing visible from the surface.

The position may be a little different.

The reason for scanning isn’t.

Know what you’re working with before you make the opening.

A response on a GPR screen doesn't automatically mean “pipe.”

The subsurface is more complicated than that.

Changes in materials, buried structures, old foundations, disturbed soil and other features can create radar responses worth investigating.

That's one reason GPR can be useful beyond traditional utility locating.

It's also why experience matters.

The goal isn't to turn every response into a confident guess. It's to evaluate the data, consider the site conditions and communicate what the information supports.

Good subsurface work isn't about pretending there are no unknowns.

It's about reducing them.

A proposed soil boring may only need a small spot on the ground.

The drill doesn't care how small the spot is if a utility runs through it.

Before environmental sampling begins, GPR and other locating methods can be used to evaluate proposed boring locations for utilities and subsurface features that deserve attention.

That gives the environmental team useful information before intrusive work begins and may help determine whether a boring should stay where it is or move.

The boring collects the sample.

The clearance work helps crews get there with fewer surprises.

A few phrases nobody wants to hear five minutes into excavation:

“Was that supposed to be there?”
“I don't see it on the plans.”
“Who marked this?”
And the classic...
“Everybody stop digging.” 😬

A little more information before excavation is usually preferable to a lot of questions afterward.
Have a safe weekend!
