Here are a few quick tips to help avoid pipes from freezing with the storm moving in and temps dropping.
1. Locate your main water shut off valve in case of leak developing.
2. Make sure all garden hoses are disconnected from spigots.
3. Leave cabinet doors open, especially to any fixtures located on or near exterior walls.
4. Leave faucets dripping. Also make sure the sinks are draining to prevent flooding. Hot water can often freeze faster than cold, so make sure you have both dripping.
5. Limit garage door usage and close promptly. Our area has a lot of homes with bathrooms located over the garage. Leaving it open for a short period of time can lead to potential problems quickly.
6. If you are leaving town it would be best to go ahead and shut that main valve off.
If you do have a pipe freeze and catch it quickly, simply heating under the cabinet for a few minutes with a blowdryer can thaw them out without damage.
If it does freeze, it may not leak until it becomes thawed and can turn catastrophic in a hurry.
