Noticed your faucet spraying sideways or the flow feeling weaker than it used to? Before you assume it is a bigger plumbing problem, check the aerator.

An aerator is the small screw-on piece at the tip of your faucet. It controls how much water leaves the faucet, capped at 2.2 gallons per minute on high under federal standards, and mixes air into the stream so the water feels and tastes better.

Over time, calcium and corrosion build up inside the aerator, especially with the mineral content in Kansas City area tap water. That buildup is usually what causes a crooked stream or reduced flow, not a problem with your pipes at all.

Water hammer happens when water rushing through a pipe is forced to stop suddenly. That stop sends a pressure wave through your plumbing system, and over time it can loosen pipe joints, wear down fixtures, and even create small leaks inside your walls that go unnoticed until real damage shows up.

A sump pump handles normal groundwater just fine. The problem is what happens when heavy, continuous rain, a power outage, or a pump malfunction pushes more water into the pit than the pump can keep up with.

A failing wax seal under your toilet does not always announce itself with a flood. Most of the time, the signs are small enough to ignore, until they are not.

A faint sewage smell near the toilet that comes and goes. A slight rocking feeling when you sit down. Water pooling around the base after a flush, even a small amount. Any of these usually means the wax seal has broken down and water or gas is escaping where the toilet meets the floor.

Left alone, this leads to floor damage that costs a lot more than the seal replacement itself.

Most garbage disposals are wired to a standard wall switch, which means an electrical connection sits close to water every single day. It works, but reaching for it with wet hands is not the safest habit, especially in a kitchen with kids or an island sink.

If you are on a septic system in the Kansas City area, a few warning signs mean it is time to call before it turns into a much bigger mess.

Slow drains throughout the house, not just one sink, often point to a septic system backing up rather than a simple clog. A soggy or unusually green patch of yard near the tank or drain field is a sign of a leak or an overflowing system. Sewage odor near the tank area, especially after rain, should never be ignored.

Catching these signs early is the difference between a routine service call and a full system repair.
