But every plumbing sound is a diagnostic signal — and some of them indicate problems that only get worse the longer they're ignored.

Here's what each sound typically means:

💥 THE BANG (Water Hammer)
That loud bang when the washing machine stops filling or the dishwasher shuts off? That's hydraulic shock — water with nowhere to go when a valve closes suddenly. It's not just annoying. Repeated shock stresses pipe joints and can eventually cause connections to fail. Modern appliances close their valves faster than older ones, which is why homes that never had this problem can develop it after an appliance upgrade.

🎵 TICKING THAT FOLLOWS HOT WATER
Starts when you run hot water, continues a few minutes after you turn it off, disappears on its own? Low water pressure in Kansas City homes is one of the most frustrating plumbing problems — because nothing is obviously broken. The water still runs. It just runs weakly.

And most homeowners adapt to it for months or years before realizing it's actually fixable.

Here's the first question that narrows everything down:

👉 IS IT ONE FIXTURE OR THE WHOLE HOUSE?

🔵 LOW PRESSURE AT ONE FIXTURE ONLY
Almost always a clogged aerator — that small screen at the tip of your faucet. Kansas City's hard water (9-12 grains per gallon) deposits mineral scale in aerators constantly. Remove it. Soak in white vinegar. Reinstall. Pressure often returns immediately. If not, check that the shut-off valve under that fixture is fully open.

🔵 LOW PRESSURE IN ONE AREA OF THE HOME
Suggests a problem with the branch line serving that area — a partially closed valve, a corroded pipe section, or mineral restriction in that specific run of pipe.

🔵 LOW PRESSURE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE HOUSE
This is the more serious category. Most common causes:

→ Pressure Reducing Valve failure — a bell-shaped device where the main line enters your home. When PRVs fail after 10-15 years, they restrict whole-house pressure. This is one of the most common and most overlooked causes we find in Kansas City homes.

→ Corroded galvanized pipes — if your home was built before the 1980s and has never been repiped, the original galvanized steel supply pipes may have corroded from the inside out over decades. What started as a 3/4" pipe may now have an effective interior diameter of 1/4" or less. Low pressure is often the first visible symptom of a repiping situation that's been building for years.

→ Municipal supply — some Kansas City neighborhoods, particularly elevated areas or those at the end of long distribution runs, receive lower supply pressure. Confirming whether the problem starts before the water even enters your home changes the fix entirely.

🔵 HOT WATER PRESSURE ONLY — COLD IS FINE?
The water heater is the likely culprit. Check both shut-off valves on the unit. If those are open, professional evaluation determines whether sediment flushing resolves it.
