Ocean Surveys, Inc.

Ocean Surveys, Inc. Specialists in marine and freshwater site surveys, including hydrographic, oceanographic, geophysical, sediment sampling, and ROV services.

OSI is a highly responsive hydrographic, geophysical, physical oceanographic and geotechnical surveying company staffed with scientists, engineers, and technicians having a broad range of experience working in both freshwater and marine environments. Company headquarters and OSI's Eastern Regional office are located in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. A Southeast area office is located in Metairie, LA,

and a Midwest area office is located in Northbrook, IL. Founded in 1965, OSI has successfully completed more than 3,000 site investigations in 37 states and 40 countries located throughout six continents. OSI annually conducts more than 150 hydrographic, high-resolution multi-sensor geophysical, oceanographic and sediment sampling projects supporting the marine design, coastal and professional engineering, environmental site assessment, marine archaeological and construction community worldwide. Our experience ranges from inland reservoirs and lakes to major rivers, bays and open water coastal environments. Types of projects that OSI has supported include:
• Port and harbor development
• Charting navigable waterways
• Coastal engineering
• Wastewater treatment and disposal
• Power generation and distribution
• Submarine cable and pipeline routing
• Dredging and disposal
• Hazardous materials investigations
• Bridge design and inspection
• Reservoir safe yield analysis
• Archaeological investigations

OSI owns, operates, and maintains an extensive inventory of state-of-the-art electronic positioning, oceanographic, geophysical and a wide range of sediment sampling equipment for supporting domestic and worldwide field data acquisition activities. Subsequent data reduction and analytical efforts employ either dedicated in-house computer assisted processing or remote site work station processing systems for analysis of acquired data in the most cost-effective manner based upon individual project and client requirements. OSI's integrated marine survey capability and over 40 years of domestic and international project experience, coupled with local knowledge and support from OSI area offices and our international affiliates located throughout the world, result in the provision of extremely cost-effective surveys for all our Clients.

The summer of 2025 was both productive and successful for OSI. Our teams were actively engaged in a wide range of projects, with three crews focused on acquiring thousands of NOAA line miles along the coast of Maine, while additional teams conducted vibratory coring operations in both inshore and offshore environments, from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast. We also executed several multi-sensor geophysical surveys, contributing valuable data to support linear transmission projects in the Northeast.

OSI is sponsoring and exhibiting at the State of the Coast Conference in New Orleans, LA – May 20-22, 2025.

OSI’s Bob Wallace, Ken Cadmus, and Dave Bell will be looking to catch up with industry friends, make new industry connections, and learn of emerging projects and innovations. Please reach out to Bob directly ([email protected]) if you would like to learn more about OSI’s geophysical survey and sediment sampling capabilities.

Did you know that OSI has supported scores of sediment resource investigations in the Gulf of Mexico (in Federal and State waters) providing both geophysical survey and geotechnical coring services. OSI is well versed in providing BOEM-compliant survey data and experienced in navigating the BOEM permitting process for MMP Activities (Geophysical Prospecting).

It’s a rare occurrence that all three “new” boats are at the shop together. We are taking advantage of a beautiful February day (for Connecticut) and giving the boats some extra TLC before they head out for a busy spring season of hydrographic, oceanographic, and marine geophysical survey.

OSI is exhibiting at the 2025 Battelle Sediments Conference in Tampa, FL. OSI’s Bob Wallace and David Bell will be tending the booth.

If you are already familiar with OSI please stop by to say hello. If you aren’t yet familiar with OSI, please stop in to learn about OSI’s geophysical survey and geotechnical sampling capabilities which are frequently called upon to support contaminated (and clean) marine and freshwater remediation projects and general infrastructure projects nationwide. We are looking forward to seeing new faces and reconnecting with our longtime industry friends.

Please reach out to Bob Wallace directly ([email protected]) if you would like to learn more about OSI’s unique sediment sampling vessels, equipment, and capabilities.

We liked R/V North Cove (2020) and R/V South Cove (2022) so much we had to have a third.

Introducing OSI’s newest custom built aluminum survey vessel, R/V Twister. Twister is pictured here on her shakedown cruise in the Connecticut River. Outfitted with a USM and electric slipring winch and capable of deploying a full geophysical survey spread, R/V Twister will soon be making miles on project sites around the US.

Contrast in OSI services - As we continue to make good progress on two different NOAA-contracted nautical charting surveys (running four multibeam vessels simultaneously) we are still supporting our other clients across various engineering disciplines. In this case, OSI is supporting a sediment characterization study in a shallow river in the Northeast. We left the outboard engines, POS MVs, and muiltibeams at home for this one and instead brought strong backs, chest waders, and coring supplies.
