And finally, the wasp we all know and don't love. Yellowjackets are familiar to most people since they often snack on human food (like sugary beverages) which can create conflict in residential landscapes. They frequently nest in abandoned rodent holes in the ground or create hanging above-ground nests. Despite their stinging reputation, these wasps still play an important role in the ecosystem! Like most wasps their larvae are “meat eaters”, and adults contribute to pest control by hunting insects like flies and caterpillars for their young. Show them some love!

One way to make your yard less attractive to yellowjackets is by making sure trash cans are tightly sealed and food is not left in outdoor spaces.

Another wasp spotlight! Sand wasps are solitary, meaning they don’t have a hive. They dig tunnels into the ground for their nests, and can often be seen moving back and forth as they bring prey insects to their offspring. Sand wasps don’t bother humans and hunt a variety of insects. The Bembix sand wasp pictured specializes on flies (including house flies and deer flies!).
