FIELD DAY TOUR SPOTLIGHT: MAKING SPACE—EXPANDING THE PUBLIC REALM IN THE U DISTRICT
What if the next great public space isn’t a park?
Walk through Seattle’s U District and see how streets, plazas, murals, art installations, private development, and community programming are being connected into a larger public-realm network. This behind-the-scenes tour will examine tactical urbanism, placemaking, public art, funding, partnerships, stewardship, and the ongoing work required to keep urban spaces active, welcoming, and resilient.
Participants will visit projects along NE 42nd Street, NE 43rd Street, Brooklyn Avenue, and surrounding gathering spaces—with the possibility of encountering installations or artwork in progress.
Presenters: Janet Lee, AICP, Urban Vitality Manager, U District Partnership; Aaron Hoard, UW Director of Regional & Community Relations, Don Blakeney, Executive Director of the U District Partnership; Marcus Johnson, Director of Clean & Safe for the U District Partnership
