Happy Sunday morning! Wanted to share these photos from a project on Summit Lake completed in 2011. Happy to see it is being well cared for and is rewarding our clients with an easy-to-maintain garden that looks good throughout the seasons.

Happy almost spring, everyone! There is lots going around Thurston County, WA, despite my lack of posting here. I also made it to a great ecological design conference in January, fitting in a terrific visit with my son in New York. Yo! from the snow-covered garden at the Brooklyn Art Museum.

Here’s a wildlife and people friendly garden designed and installed for some lovely folks in 2022. Featured pavers in the backyard are architectural 12” x 36” concrete slabs arrayed in a jack-on-jack pattern for a modern vibe, with some square pavers mixed with flagstone for more patterning in the walkways. In the front we used an ashlar patterned cobblestone paver. Plants include many natives, low water and pollinator-friendly plants, and plants selected to provide 4 seasons of interest. Delivery people and neighbors declare it the best yard in the neighborhood, according to the clients! ❤️❤️❤️ Instead of typical turf we used a flowering lawn mix which stays greener with less water and provides nectar sources for bees. The clients are enjoying watching all kinds of birds and pollinators, and they love hanging out outside in all kinds of weather. Planting-wise, things are just getting started, but coming along nicely. Design: Linda Andrews. Installed by Cascadecopia, LLC.

What a transformation! This formerly tricky slope is now much easier and safer to navigate, with more safe parking spots, a safer driveway, and so much more character and beauty than before. The plantings will provide year-round interest, wildlife value, beauty, and slope retention. This is just the beginning. Thanks to Rick Aue of Capital Rock walls for executing this boulder outcropping. This is what 78 tons of boulders look like, in talented hands. Plants will soften and enhance the effect as they mature.

Science on the Benefits of Gardening: Gardening is Good for Us, But Why? New article by Dr. Donald Rakow “We can spend our days obsessing over political or economic turmoil, social problems, or environmental degradation. Or, we can respond to our sweaty, dirty gardening activities with a sense of awe at the mysterious, wonder-filled natural world; with deep feelings of appreciation..”

I love a garden that blends into the larger landscape, creating a cultivated wildness. I love a crisp hardscape softened by plants. I love a relaxed feel with lots of repetition. As much as I am smitten by flowers, they don’t always have to be the stars. Masses of ferns create sense of place, very much at home on the edge of the Salish Sea.It feels like you’re on a hike, just walking around your house.
