Lime selection-preparing your lawn for winter.
Preparing you lawn for winter with lime and fertilizer will help it thrive in the spring.
Lime application raises the PH (acidity and alkalinity)) of the soil. Fertilizer and microorganisms are more effective when the soil is in the proper ph range of 6-7 or slightly acidic.
Western Washington lawns are often too acidic for optimum conditions. Therefore, applying lime annually may be necessary.
Soil testing is the best way to know your ph and how much lime to apply. In our area we use Thurston Conservation District https://www.thurstoncd.com/working-lands/soil-testing/ to test the samples from the properties we serve. They are very affordable. You can follow their procedures and submit samples yourself, or you can contact Two Jays Landscape, Inc. to collect samples for you, submit them, and do the application of lime and nutrients. Results and actions needed are provided in laymen’s terms for the public.
Lime type is important. Dolomite Lime is typically suggested with the results. However, most of the forms available near me are too powdery. I ended up wearing more of the product than was applied to the first lawns I serviced due to a slight breeze. Save the powdery stuff for mixing in garden soils. I suggest a pelletized lime for easy spreading. Super Sweet lime uses about half the amount of typical lime. Always read the labels of any product that you choose and follow the instructions they provide.
Lime can be applied in a couple ways. 1. Apply all of your lime at once. 2. Apply half of your lime in the fall and half of you lime in the spring. Either way will improve your results and help you produce the best looking lawn on the block. www.twojayslandscape.com
