As your lawn responds to nature's spring awakening, help it prepare for a year of healthy growth by supplying it with the lawn care it needs. You will help your lawn protect itself against this year's w**ds, diseases, and drought by doing a few basic chores.

Rake up any remaining fall leaves and debris so they do not contribute to the thatch layer in your lawn. Raking also helps to loosen matted grass clumps that are caused by snow mold and can suffocate new growth.

Aerate - Aeration is the cure for compacted soil and is essential for a truly healthy lawn. Omaha lawns should be aerated once per year so if you didn’t get around to it last spring, you can do so now in the early spring.

Consider dethatching your lawn if thatch appears to be an issue. Dethatching turf is best achieved in the spring.

Apply pre-emergent to prevent w**d seeds from germinating. For this application the timing is crucial. You will want ground temperatures to be around 55 degrees before applying.

Apply spring fertilizer in combination with the pre-emergent.
