Screened porch or covered patio?

It sounds like a simple decision until you realize you could be living with that choice for the next 20 years.

We've seen homeowners build a covered patio only to realize bugs keep them from using it. We've also seen homeowners choose a screened porch and later wish they had the open-air feeling of a covered patio.

Getting it wrong can mean spending even more money to change the space later.

In our latest video, we break down:

• The biggest differences between a screened porch and covered patio
• Which option gives you more airflow and flexibility
• When bugs and climate should influence your decision
• Why a screened porch typically costs more
• How to choose based on how your family actually uses the backyard
• When combining screened and open areas might make sense

Before you choose either one, ask yourself this:

What is the number one reason I'm not using my backyard more right now?

Your answer might tell you exactly what you should build.

Some deck lighting is worth every penny. Some of it, I would never recommend.

The right lighting can completely change how your deck looks and feels at night, but spending more does not always mean you are getting a better result.

Here’s how I rank some of the most common deck lighting options we see.

What would you put in the S tier?

Christian's been with Deck Bros for about six years now. He started small, his fourth job ever was just replacing a few boards alongside Luan. Since then, it's turned into steady, reliable work he can count on. "I have a job all the time," he says. "I’ll stay happy here."

What sticks with him most isn't the paycheck it's the flexibility to be there for his family when it matters, and the moment a homeowner thanks the crew after a project wraps. "You never think about it until you're done," he says. "The homeowner comes and says, 'I love it.'" He's quick to give credit to the whole team, not just himself that's the kind of humility that runs through this crew.

Six years of steady work, a boss who looks out for his people, and jobs that actually end with a thank-you. That's the standard here.

We're hiring contractors who want that same kind of stability.

Most homeowners start calling deck contractors in April or May.

That might actually be the worst time to start planning your project.

By the time the weather gets nice, the best contractors may already be booked, material prices can be higher, and you could be waiting months to get your project started.

In our latest video, we break down what homeowners should know about building a deck in every season:

• Why spring projects should actually be planned months earlier
• What happens to pricing and availability during summer
• Why fall might be the most underrated time to start
• Why you should not immediately rule out a winter deck build
• When you can get better availability and potentially avoid seasonal price increases
• Our preferred strategy for having your deck ready before summer starts

If I could give homeowners one piece of advice, it would be this:

Don't wait until you want to USE your deck to start planning your deck.

The earlier you start the conversation, the more options you have.

Jose didn't get into this trade by accident his dad Angel is the reason. "He's always there for me," Jose says. "The more I learn from him, the more I can work on my own... and show him I can do better things."

That's the quiet engine behind a lot of great craftsmanship: gratitude, mentorship, and wanting to make someone proud. It's not just a job for Jose it's a relationship, built one project at a time.

At Deck Bros, that's not the exception. It's the culture. We build people up the same way we build decks with patience, with pride, and with family standards even when you're not actually family.

We're hiring contractors who want to grow like this.

Not all composite decking is created equal.

Here’s how I’d rank some of the most popular options based on the materials we actually work with.

TimberTech AZEK gets the S tier for its PVC construction, long warranty, heat-mitigating technology, and how easy it is to work with.

Deckorators Voyage and MoistureShield both land in the A tier.

Trex Transcend is around a B for me, while Trex Select falls closer to a C or D as a more entry-level option.

And the generic composite decking you find at big box stores? That’s going at the bottom.

Of course, there is more to choosing decking than a letter grade. Budget, availability, maintenance, warranty, and how you plan to use your deck all matter.

What would you move on this list?

Ask Angel what he likes best about the job and he doesn't hesitate — railings. The joists, the composite work, cutting clean 45-degree angles on the corners, he's got a handle on all of it. But railings are where the skill really shows, and where he takes the most pride.

"Thank God I learned that," he says. "Every time I work, in every place, it's quick and easy." That's not luck — that's reps, mentorship, and a crew that actually teaches the details instead of rushing past them.

That's what building with Deck Bros looks like: young guys getting genuinely good at the trade, not just getting through the day.

We're hiring contractors who want to build real skill, not just punch a clock.

More options usually lead to a better deck.

Some contractors work exclusively with one decking brand. We take a different approach.

Every homeowner has a different budget, style, and priority, so we like being able to offer multiple brands at different price points instead of pushing everyone toward the same product.

Availability matters too. A great product does not help much if it is difficult to get or there is limited support in your area.

Our job is to give you the options, explain the differences, and help you choose the decking that makes the most sense for your project.

Angel's been teaching his son Jose the trade not just how to swing a hammer, but how to think like a builder.

"One has more brain, the other has an unmatched work ethic."

They don't always agree. Some days it gets heated on site. But that's the job every disagreement becomes a fix, every fix becomes a lesson.

That's what it actually looks like to build with family, on a crew that treats every project like family too. It's not always smooth. It's always real. And at the end of the day, the deck gets built right.

That's the standard here at Deck Bros,
Love First, Do the Work with Integrity, even when it's hard.

We're hiring contractors who want to actually grow, not just show up.
