Still Standing: KANEKO
Today, KANEKO is a creativity center in downtown Omaha. But back in 1911, the building we see today was just beginning its construction.
The Fairmont Creamery Company built the steel and concrete structure to replace their former plant. While the company itself flourished, the plant would be inactive by the middle of the century. By 1998, it was being used as a warehouse for automobiles and building materials. That’s when Jun and Ree Kaneko purchased the property.
The couple wanted to create a cultural center for the arts with an art gallery and event space. The goal was for KANEKO to become what it is today — a space for Omahans to engage and explore their creativity with no restrictions. But to get there required renovations on a historical building that had long been neglected.
When it came to the creation of the art gallery, they trusted Miller Electric. We navigated the complexities of working on a historical building, while providing modern solutions for the space’s lighting and electrical fixtures — all with the goal to showcase the art.
We’re proud to have been trusted not only with updating a historical building but helping create a cultural hub that can be enjoyed by Omahans!
