A Closer Look at Drain Tile

Drain tile plays an important role in managing groundwater around a basement foundation.

Installed along the base of the foundation, drain tile gives groundwater a controlled place to go rather than allowing it to build up and create pressure around the foundation. As water reaches the drain tile, it is collected and directed toward the sump pit, where it can be pumped safely away from the home.

Once the installation is complete and the concrete is replaced, the drain tile is hidden beneath the basement floor, but it continues working whenever groundwater is present.

It may be out of sight, but drain tile plays an important role in keeping a basement dry.

When water gets into a basement, the goal shouldn't be to simply deal with what happened during the last heavy rain. A waterproofing system should be designed with the next storm in mind.

That means collecting groundwater before it becomes a problem, directing it to the sump system, and pumping it safely away from the home. When needed, exterior drainage can also help manage water before it reaches the foundation.

Every part of the system has a job to do, and those parts need to work together when conditions are at their worst.

What Makes a Foundation Repair Last?

A foundation wall is under constant pressure from the soil outside of it. When that pressure exceeds what the wall can resist, the wall may crack, bow, or move inward.

That’s where reinforcement comes in.

The carbon fiber straps you see in this photo are bonded directly to the foundation wall and run vertically from the bottom of the wall toward the floor system above. Once installed, the carbon fiber adds significant tensile strength to the wall, helping it resist additional inward movement.

Carbon fiber is especially effective because it is extremely strong, doesn’t rust or corrode, and becomes a permanent reinforcement of the wall rather than a temporary patch over the damage.

A lasting foundation repair isn't about making a crack disappear. It's about keeping the wall from moving further.
