Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
Pest Control
Keeping your home free from pests like roaches, mice, and bedbugs is crucial for your health. Pests can contaminate food, exacerbate asthma and allergies, and cause structural damage. Regular pest control is essential to avoid these issues.
Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
Smoke Detectors: Vacuum the alarms regularly to remove dust and change the batteries. Replace the smoke alarms every 10 years (they have a 30% failure rate after that period).
Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Known as the "silent killer," carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and tasteless. Test your CO detectors at least once a month by pressing the test button. Though maintenance-free, dust and dirt can accumulate, affecting sensitivity, so regular testing is vital.
Refrigerator Deep Cleaning
Mark your calendars—November 15th is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day!
Ice Tray: Start by discarding old ice and cleaning the tray.
Filters: Change your refrigerator’s water and air filters at least every six months. Neglecting these can result in contaminated water.
Exterior: Don’t forget to clean the outside of your fridge. Pull it out and vacuum the cooling coils and mop the area around it.
Dishwasher, Stove, Oven, & Range
Stove & Oven: Pull out your stove and clean the floors and walls around it. Also, inspect and change the range hood filters.
Dishwasher: Clean the racks, thin gasket, and spray holes. Be sure to scrub the bases and edges, using bleach if mildew is present.
Fireplaces
Have a CSIA-certified chimney sweep inspect your venting system annually to ensure it’s in top condition.
Heating, A/C, and Ventilation
Inspect your heating and cooling equipment annually (or as per the manufacturer’s recommendations). Don’t forget to change the filters to keep your system running efficiently.
Exterior, Garden, and Roof Deck
Seal any holes or gaps to keep rodents and the elements out.
Shut off outdoor faucets, store hoses, and insulate pipes to prevent freezing in colder weather.
Inspect your roof and deck for damage, and clean gutters to avoid blockages.
Stay safe out there and enjoy every moment!
