🐛 LOOK WHAT DAWN FOUND AT THE NURSERY TODAY! 🐛
We had a VERY cool visitor at Christen Farm Nursery… and this little guy was about the size of a med pickle! 🥒😳
Meet the Cecropia Moth Caterpillar ⭐ the future star of one of North America’s largest and most spectacular moths! 🦋 In the Saturniidae family.
🌿 A FEW COOL CECROPIA FACTS:
🐛 GIANT in the caterpillar world!
A full-grown Cecropia caterpillar can reach around 5 inches long. The one we found was already a pretty impressive chunk!
🎨 Look at those crazy colors!
Their light green bodies are covered with colorful red, orange, yellow and blue bumps called tubercles. And despite looking like something from a science-fiction movie, those bumps don't harm people.
🦋 From pickle-sized caterpillar to HUGE moth!
The adult Cecropia moth can have a wingspan of roughly 4½–6 inches! Its reddish-brown wings have beautiful white markings and crescent-shaped spots.
🌙 And here's the really cool part…
Adult Cecropia moths don't eat! Their only job as adults is to reproduce. They emerge, find a mate, lay eggs… and the life cycle starts all over again.
❄️ They overwinter as a cocoon.
After the caterpillar finishes growing, it spins a cocoon attached to a branch or trunk and spends the winter there. The adult moth emerges the following year.
🌳 And don't worry about finding one on your trees! Cecropia caterpillars generally don't occur in numbers large enough to cause serious damage to healthy trees.
