The Gerrit Smith Estate is a place where history truly lived. In the 1800s, this property was the home of Gerrit Smith—an abolitionist, philanthropist, and reformer whose estate became a center for justice, faith, and courage. It played a role in the abolition movement, supported freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad, and welcomed conversations that helped shape our nation.
Although the original mansion was lost to fire in 1936, the remaining buildings still carry the weight and meaning of that history. Preserving them matters. These structures are reminders of the sacrifices, convictions, and hope that came before us.
Preserving history matters to us. ❤️
The Gerrit Smith Estate in Peterboro, New York is more than just a building—it’s a tangible piece of our shared history, a place that tells a story about faith, perseverance, and the people who came before us.
Over the summer, Immanuel Enterprise had the privilege of redoing the roof on this historic estate. Caring for a structure like this isn’t just about repairs; it’s about stewardship. It’s about honoring the past while ensuring it can stand strong for future generations to learn from, gather around, and appreciate.
We’re grateful to play even a small role in protecting a landmark that means so much to this community and to history itself. Preservation is an investment—not just in buildings, but in legacy.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support the care and restoration of places like the Gerrit Smith Estate. These places still have stories to tell.
