Material mistake Monday

One of the most common mistakes I see when building on the coast is treating galvanized and stainless steel as if they're the same thing.

Galvanized hardware has its place, but when you're building near saltwater, exposure matters. The closer you get to the coast, the faster corrosion becomes a factor.

I've seen well-built projects start having problems long before the lumber fails simply because the wrong fasteners or hardware were used.

Stainless steel isn't always necessary, and galvanized isn't always wrong. The key is understanding where each belongs and matching the hardware to the environment.

The wrong product can make good work fail.

On the Gulf Coast, materials are exposed to constant moisture, salt air, heat, and movement. That environment changes what you should be using.

For example:

-Standard pressure-treated lumber isn’t the same as marine-treated.

-Galvanized hardware doesn’t perform the same as stainless near saltwater.

-Not all Pilings are designed to be submerged in saltwater.

When materials aren’t matched to the exposure level, deterioration happens much faster than expected — even if the install was done correctly. Building near water isn’t just about structure — it’s about choosing materials that are designed for that environment.
