Salt & Sage Gardens 🌱 Creating edible gardens for homes and businesses

A garden plan is good. A garden plan the kids are actually excited about? Even better🌿

For our fall turnover, my son helped choose what we’d grow, plant the seeds, and figure out meals he could make with the harvest.

That curiosity is exactly what gardens have the power to cultivate in kids!

But behind every thriving garden is someone figuring out what to plant, when to plant it, and what happens next season.

That’s the part I want to make easier for all gardeners--big and small.

Why is my lettuce to tall?!!? It’s called bolting and it’s part of the natural plant lifecycle. The more you know 🌈

You don’t always need a full makeover. Sometimes one raised bed will do the trick!

Getting the timing right, the plant right, the soil and irrigation right…that’s where most people need a little extra help so it is more successful out of the gate. Now…we enjoy and observe and feast!

It’s all kinda chic we think 🌿

Gardening doesn’t have to be perfect or impressive. It just has to make you a little more curious and maybe a little more in awe of what can grow from a seed.

And honestly? Starting your own edible garden might be the chicest part.

August gardens are equal parts harvesting, troubleshooting, and quietly plotting fall. 🌱

1. Check the soil.
August water needs remain high, so check your soil’s moisture levels and make sure drip emitters are not clogged.

2. Harvest often and clear what’s finished.
Regular picking keeps summer crops producing. Remove spent or bolting plants to make room for the next season.

3. Start fall before it feels like fall.
Begin planning beds and starting cool-season seedlings while summer crops are still growing. In Southern California, August is the bridge between the summer harvest and the fall garden.

As the seasons begin to shift, notice what the garden is telling you and grow with it. 🙌

Every garden could use a some bodyguards to help protect your growth. 🌿🐛

Nasturtiums can help draw aphids away from prized crops, rosemary’s strong aroma may confuse some moths searching for host plants, marigolds can help reduce pressure from certain garden pests, and native salvia is often less appealing to browsing rabbits.

Are they an invisible force field? Sadly no. 😅

But thoughtful companion planting can support a healthier, more resilient garden while adding color, fragrance, and pollinator activity.

The goal of a garden doesn’t have to be total self-sufficiency. It can be to simply have more than one option. 🌱

It won’t fix the entire food system but it can make your household less dependent on it, one basil leaf, tomato, or bowl of greens at a time.

No acreage required. No homestead makeover necessary. Just start where you are.

Consider this your reminder that July is still very much a planting month if you’re in Zone 10b. 👀🌱

🌶️ Okra: Loves the heat and produces more as temperatures rise.
🫛 Bush beans: Grow quickly enough to deliver a generous late-summer harvest.
🌿 Basil: Thrives in summer warmth and benefits from frequent harvesting.
🌼 French Marigolds: Bring summer color and beneficial insects around edible crops.
🥒 Summer squash: Grows quickly enough to provide another summer harvest.

These homeowners in South Orange County had an incredible backyard food forest and an overlooked space with even more potential. 🌿

transformed this open space into a late-summer garden bed, added two vermicompost setups, and left room for the next round of planting.

Sometimes transforming a garden isn’t about starting over. It’s about adding purpose to the space that’s already there.

You can still plant in July! Consider this like a midsummer garden draft pick. 🏆

We’re choosing plants that can take the heat, mature quickly, and make the most of the weeks before fall planting begins.

The line up:
🌼 French marigolds
🤍 Sweet alyssum
🍆 Eggplant
🍉 Sugar Baby watermelon
🌿 Chives, dill, basil, rosemary + thyme
💜 Salvia
🥒 Crookneck squash + round zucchini🌱 Okra

Will the watermelon be a little risky? Yes. Are we trying it anyway? Also yes. 😅
