Why build a monolithic dome?

Building a monolithic dome offers several advantages and benefits that make it an attractive choice for various applications. A monolithic dome is a structure made from a single, continuous material, typically a reinforced concrete shell. Here are some reasons why one might choose to build a monolithic dome:

Strength and Durability: Monolithic domes are incredibly strong and durable due to their curved shape and continuous construction. They can withstand extreme weather conditions, including hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and more.

Energy Efficiency: The curved shape of monolithic domes promotes efficient airflow and temperature distribution. This design, along with the thermal mass of concrete, can result in excellent energy efficiency and lower heating and cooling costs.

Natural Disaster Resistance: Monolithic domes are highly resistant to natural disasters, making them suitable for regions prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other harsh environmental conditions. Their structural integrity and shape help them withstand and dissipate forces from these events.

Low Maintenance: Due to their sturdy construction and resistance to weathering, monolithic domes typically require less maintenance compared to traditional buildings. This can result in reduced long-term maintenance costs.

Versatility: Monolithic domes can be used for various purposes, such as houses, schools, churches, sports facilities, storage, and more. Their open and flexible interior space allows for customization to meet different functional requirements.

Quick Construction: Constructing a monolithic dome can be faster than traditional construction methods. The continuous construction process, along with the fact that the shell serves as both structure and weatherproofing, can lead to shorter construction timelines.

Fire Resistance: Concrete is naturally fire-resistant, offering an additional layer of safety in case of a fire outbreak.

Sound Insulation: The thick concrete shell of a monolithic dome provides excellent sound insulation, making it suitable for environments where noise isolation is important.

Eco-Friendly: The materials used in monolithic dome construction, such as concrete and steel, can be sourced sustainably. Additionally, the energy efficiency of these structures contributes to a reduced carbon footprint over time.

Unique Aesthetics: Monolithic domes have a distinct and unique architectural appeal that can be aesthetically pleasing to some individuals. The interior space can be designed in creative and imaginative ways due to the absence of load-bearing walls.

Longevity: Monolithic domes have a reputation for long lifespan due to their durable materials and construction. This can result in reduced lifecycle costs compared to structures that need frequent repairs and renovations.

Despite these advantages, it's important to note that monolithic dome construction may also have some limitations and challenges. The construction process can be specialized and require skilled labor, and the initial cost might be higher than traditional construction in some cases. However, for those who value the benefits mentioned above, building a monolithic dome can be a practical and innovative choice.

Southeast Texas was devastated by flood waters and storm damage. I have not been able to see all the types of damage yet because of all the roads being blocked by water. I personally live in a monolithic dome and the storm ragged and we were all safe inside. Unfortunately the waters rose higher than ever before where we live. In over 50 years the water has never entered homes like it has with Hurricane Harvey.

We had 10 1/2 inches of water in the house because the waters came in the front and back doors. I want to also tell you something I learned about rising water inside a dome. While we had water seeping in at the doors slowly the water began to come in from the shower and started filling up the bath tub. I suggest if you ever think this will happen where you live to put a shut off valve on your sewer line to keep water from coming inside. Whatever the water level outside your dome it will find a way in somewhere to equalize inside. Having a way to seal off windows and doors from leaking under the threshold and around the door seals is also recommended.

I am going to invest in buying a small set of closed cell foam to spray around the covered windows and doors to seal any cracks. It can be cut out after the flood. Close the sewer valve and leave if there is ever a chance it will flood like this again. The drainage ditch was already filled to capacity just before the real down poor began for a solid 12 hours. It rose almost 2 ft. Lessons learned will help prevent this from happening to others.

The clean up is going great because when the water began to go down the electricity came back on. The AC was turned on and the dehumidifiers are running. From 73% humidity to 50% in 3 days. The third day we added another dehumidifier to dry it out faster. The AC has the temperature at 70 deg and holding steady. I have not cut out the drywall because I have seen no signs of mold at all. We had no carpet. We use rugs and we got them up just in case because the water was already at the slab level. We got everything off the floor. Some of our bedroom furniture and appliances did suffer. That all can be replaced.

The experience has made me even more committed to tell everyone of the benefits of a dome. I am so glad I did and will never again live in a home that is not a monolithic dome. I will add updates of the drying out process in the coming days and weeks.
