Large gas leak at a Sacramento school renovation. The contractor isolated a leaking 200’ section of poly, and tracer gas testing produced two elevated H₂ readings about 20’ apart. The first location turned out to be the end of a 4” PVC conduit that the poly gas line ran through, explaining why tracer gas was surfacing away from the actual leak. Excavation at the second location exposed the source: a leaking coupling just before the poly entered the conduit. An excavator had struck the line, gouging a chunk out of both the fitting and the pipe. A good example of how tracer gas can travel through conduit and create readings well away from the actual failure.

No way to electronically trace the pipe on this one, but the peak acoustic readings lined up with the presumed path of the main. We narrowed the leak down to a 10’ x 10’ section of slab and drilled pressure-relief holes along the suspected path. Even at low pressure, the entire slab was loud no matter which acoustic device I used. Drilling pressure-relief holes and probing down closer to the pipe helped eliminate trapped and traveling compressed gas, allowing me to narrow the leak back down to my original marked location. 🤣

2000’ 10” fire suppression loop leaking approximately 250k gallons an hour. Massive 14’ crack!! Peak readings and a sound like I have never heard before on the digital, it cut out the volume on my analog it was so loud!

Commercial 2” water service under red clay up in the hills.. Again, tracer gas got me in the vicinity but nailed it acoustically. Soil conditions don’t always allow for the tracer gas to surface above the leak.

Commercial underground leak. Tracer gas got me in the vicinity, ended up switching to acoustic to pinpoint. The actual leak was 20 feet away from where the Tracer gas was surfacing that’s why it’s important to confirm your Tracer gas findings with acoustic.
