We love our conifers π²π²π²
Winter, when other trees have lost their leaves, may be the best time to get to know your local conifers. Oregon is home to about 30 species of cone-bearing trees, second in the U.S. only to California. Elevation is one clue to identity. Port Orford cedar, western red-cedar, Sitka spruce, western white pine, grand fir, shore pine, and western hemlock grow down to sea level. True firs, mountain hemlock, and larch tend to grow at higher elevations, typically above 2,000 to 4,000 feet. Douglas-fir can be found at both high and low elevations.
