Have you spotted mushrooms in your yard or on your trees this fall? Read more about what they could mean in our new blog!

After a hot summer, cooler temperatures and heavy autumn rains can make mushrooms pop up seemingly out of nowhere. When they show up on or near a tree, the natural question is: "Does this mean my tree is dying?" The answer is: it depends on where the mushrooms are growing.

Last Wednesday our crew headed to West Bend for the Wisconsin Arborist Association (WAA) Fall Seminar.

The WAA holds multiple conferences, seminars, and events throughout the year. Attending these allows our certified arborists to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and keeps the crew up to date on best practices and emerging arboriculture research.

One of the topics that we found the most interesting was the new cultivars of tree species being developed. Cultivars are bred for a variety of reasons, including disease resistance. Thanks to Johnson's Nursery for this specific presentation, and if you would like to look through their cultivar list for yourself: https://kb.jniplants.com/all/plants/trees

Ultimately, taking the time to attend these seminars makes us better and safer arborists and helps us provide our customers with the best experience possible.

👉 This is a case where, while we didn't want the other top to fail, we were expecting it to happen and did all we could to prepare for it.

❓So why did this happen and what did we do about it?

1️⃣ The storm damage fell into a severely compromised basswood. There was decay from bottom to top, and in a tree that's already soft to begin with, this made for a challenging starting point.

2️⃣ We spent time weighing our different options for rigging and removal. With each option come different risks, and we felt that cutting out the storm damage and having the other tree fail was a calculated risk we could anticipate and prepare for.

3️⃣ We paused our work to discuss what was likely to happen with the homeowner. They were understanding and appreciated the heads-up before it happened.

👉 We believe that this last point is part of what sets us apart from other tree care companies. Our experience and credentialing allow us to calculate the risks during set up, but our integrity leads us to talking honestly and in an upfront manner with clients.

🪵 Tree care is dangerous. There are risks in every job. Whether you work with us, or a different company, we encourage you to review how tree care companies handle the challenging situations. It's easy to post the jobs that go well, but you'll learn a lot about a company based on how they handle the jobs that don't go perfectly.

Yesterday the Hillcrest team took the day off of tree work and spent some intentional time on training.

This included checking gear, reviewing chainsaw operation and PPE.

These days are vital to building camaraderie, making sure that the team is on the same page, and sharing knowledge and experience with one another.

And all of this helps us give YOU a better experience.

🌳 Tree work shouldn't be like fast food. Because quick and cheap certainly doesn't mean quality.

💯 Always go with a certified arborist. Your trees will thank you.

👀 Ever wonder what it's like to fall 80 feet from a tree?

😎 Apparently, it's not too bad when you're in the hands of these guys. That gentle drop down is due to some smart rigging by the crew. This is one thing that will set apart a company with advanced knowledge and techniques, versus a company that will just drop pieces to the ground.
