Concrete in Florida isn’t as simple as it looks.A lot of people think it’s just about pouring and smoothing. But in reality, the quality of concrete work is decided long before the mix even touches the ground. In Florida, conditions are different.Heat, moisture, and soil movement can destroy a slab if the job isn’t done properly. Most problems come from things you don’t see:– Poor base preparation– No proper compaction– Skipping reinforcement– Ignoring drainageAt first, everything may look fine. But after a few months — cracks appear, water starts pooling, edges begin to fail. And by that time, fixing it costs more than doing it right from the start. That’s why we focus on the full process:• Proper site prep• Solid and compacted base• Reinforcement where it matters• Clean, level finishingBecause good concrete isn’t about day one —it’s about how it performs over time.⸻📩 Not sure what your project needs?Reach out - we’ll guide you the right way.📞 (321) 348-6071🔹 WBC Concrete – Pouring Only the Best Solutions! 🔹

Quick guide: how to estimate how much concrete you need

Before ordering concrete, one of the first questions is simple:
how many cubic yards do you actually need?

The basic formula is:

Length Ă— Width Ă— Thickness = Volume

For concrete, thickness is usually converted into feet, then the total volume is divided by 27 to get cubic yards.

Example:
A slab that is 20 ft long, 10 ft wide, and 4 inches thick:

20 Ă— 10 Ă— 0.33 = 66 cubic feet
66 Ă· 27 = 2.44 cubic yards

A few things to keep in mind:
- always measure carefully
- convert thickness correctly
- add a little extra for waste and uneven ground
- don’t cut it too close on the order

Running short in the middle of a pour creates bigger problems than ordering slightly more.

Good planning starts with accurate numbers

Why proper base preparation is critical for concreteConcrete is only as strong as what’s underneath it.No matter how good the mix is, a weak base will lead to failure.Without proper base preparation:- the slab settles unevenly- cracks appear- edges break down faster- the lifespan is significantly reducedA solid base does three things:✔️ provides stable support✔️ distributes the load evenly✔️ prevents movement over timeSkipping this step or doing it “good enough” always shows up later -and fixing it usually means starting over.Good concrete work starts before the pour.Base preparation isn’t optional - it’s the foundation of everything.📩 Not sure what your project needs?Reach out - we’ll guide you the right way.📞 (321) 348-6071🔹 WBC Concrete – Pouring Only the Best Solutions! 🔹

How thick should a concrete slab be for a car?

For most residential driveways, the standard thickness is:

4 inches (10 cm) - minimum for regular passenger vehicles.

But in many cases, going thicker is the smarter choice:

5–6 inches is recommended if:
- heavier vehicles (SUVs, trucks) are used
- the soil conditions are not ideal
- you want extra durability and longer lifespan

Thickness isn’t just about the concrete itself.
The base preparation and compaction are just as important.

A thicker slab on a poorly prepared base will still fail.
A properly built base with the right thickness will last for years.

Slab vs footing vs foundation - what’s the difference?

These terms are often mixed up, but they serve different purposes in construction.

Slab
A flat concrete surface used as a base or floor.
Common for driveways, patios, and house floors.

Footing
A deeper, reinforced concrete structure that supports load-bearing walls.
It spreads the weight and prevents the structure from sinking.

Foundation
The entire structural base of a building.
It includes footings and may include slabs, walls, or other elements depending on the design.

In simple terms:
- slab = surface
- footing = support
- foundation = whole system

Using the right element in the right place is critical for long-term stability.

Cheap concrete will cost you twice. Here’s why.

Most people think they’re saving money by choosing the cheapest option.
But in reality — they’re just delaying the real cost.

Here’s what usually happens:

• Weak concrete mix (low PSI)
• Poor base preparation
• No reinforcement (rebar or fiber)
• Bad finishing

At first, everything looks fine.
But after 6–12 months in Florida heat and rain:

Cracks appear.
The surface starts breaking.
Water gets inside — and the damage gets worse.

And now you’re not fixing it — you’re replacing it.

That “cheap” driveway or patio?
It turns into a full redo.

We see this all the time.

Good concrete work is not just pouring.
It’s proper preparation, the right mix, and the right process.
