🧱 WHY RETAINING WALLS OVER 4 FEET NEED GEOGRID
When it comes to retaining walls, it’s not just about stacking blocks and making them look good. The structure behind the wall is what determines whether it will stand for years or eventually fail.
Once a retaining wall gets taller, the amount of pressure from the soil behind it increases dramatically. That’s where geogrid reinforcement becomes an important part of the system.
🔹 WHAT DOES GEOGRID DO?
Geogrid is a reinforcement material installed between courses of the wall and extended back into the compacted soil.
Think of it as tying the wall into the soil behind it.
It helps:
✅ Increase the wall’s stability
✅ Resist soil pressure pushing the wall outward
✅ Reduce the risk of leaning or bowing
✅ Improve resistance to sliding and overturning
✅ Reinforce the soil mass behind the wall
✅ Create a stronger, longer-lasting retaining wall system
🚨 A COMMON MISTAKE
A wall can look perfect when it’s first installed and still be structurally inadequate.
Without proper reinforcement, drainage, and a properly prepared base, hydrostatic pressure and soil movement can eventually cause:

❌ Cracking
❌ Separation
❌ Settlement
❌ Complete wall failure
📏 IMPORTANT: The exact reinforcement requirements depend on the wall height, block system, soil conditions, surcharge loads, drainage, setbacks, and local requirements. Many wall systems require engineering or specific reinforcement details once walls reach certain heights.
Don’t build a retaining wall based on what “looks right.” Build it based on what is structurally required.
