Sargent's Equipment Department sits at about 65 people strong, with maintenance, fabrication, the machine shop, small tools, transportation, and parts all working hand in hand. From Stillwater to the field mechanics in the Mid-Atlantic, the goal stays the same: keep the iron ready so the crews can build. Our Equipment Manager, Tim Richards, started as a mechanic in 1985 and has watched the shop grow with the company. Welder Matthew Smart joined the team in 1999 when there were four of them. Today, there are about 17. Assistant Equipment Manager Brandon Mace, who steps into Tim's role in 2027, puts it plainly. "We all have to work together to turn machines out."

In our 100th anniversary year, it's worth saying out loud. These teams are a big part of how Sargent keeps its word. Most days, no one outside the shop notices, and that's how they want it. As Matthew puts it, "If you do something right, then no one knows you did anything at all."

A hundred years ago, the people who built this company learned the work by doing it, alongside people who already knew how.

This week, the 11th class of the Sargent Construction Academy started the same way. High school grads, on payroll from day one, full benefits, no tuition bill waiting at the end of it.

A few years from now, some of them will be running equipment. Some will be leading crews. All of them will be employee-owners with a stake in what they help build.

Welcome to the team, Deaken Cousins, Mason Dufour, Ben Grant, Brody Howe, Landon Pfeffer, Hayden Soucy, Dylan Sutherland, and Payton Walker!

After 18 years behind the controls of a bulldozer, Dan Mosholder has hung up his hard hat. Dan joined Sargent in July 2008 as a dozer operator and got his start on a 2-mile landfill access road in Cumberland, Virginia. From there, he went on to leave his mark on jobs like the mass grading at Piedmont Triad International Airport and the Hilltop landfill excavation in Alexandria.

Dan's skill behind the sticks earned him a trip to CAT's proving grounds in Illinois, where he and a handful of operators from around the country put new dozer models through their paces and gave the engineers some straight talk. Foremen and supervisors knew they could count on him when a job got tough, and plenty of younger operators learned the trade by watching him work. His advice to the next generation? Stick it out, start on the ground, and never be afraid to ask a question.

Now Dan is trading job sites for road trips, with plans to head to Florida, see the western U.S., take a river cruise in Europe, and go camping with his wife and granddaughter. Thanks for everything, Dan. Enjoy your retirement, you earned it.

Exit 35 in S**o just earned some recognition.

Sargent received the 2026 ASCE Maine Kitty Breskin Award for our work on the Exit 35 interchange, alongside partners Maine Turnpike Authority, HNTB, and Stantec.

The project had a few firsts for MTA: a soil nail wall built beneath a live I-95 overpass, a collector-distributor road, and a realignment of Goose Fair Brook. Traffic kept moving the whole time.

Soft ground, tight quarters, and a highway that never stopped. The crew figured it out.

In December 2022, the Maine Turnpike Authority awarded Sargent Corp...

100 years in. Ranked #375 on the Engineering News-Record Top 400 Contractors list.

Not a bad way to mark a century. Our 650+ employee-owners do the work every day, and this one reflects that. Thanks to every person who had a hand in it.

Revenue rises as contractors balance labor resources against market risks and rewards amid surge in data center projects.
