Spent a Saturday raking dry brush and star thistle into a pile at the back fence? That pile is not gone, it is just moved, and until it gets hauled off it is cover sitting at ground level right against your fence line. 🍂 The bigger half of the problem is already in the soil, because those plants dropped their seed before they dried out, so the same patch comes back thicker next spring. A w**d abatement plan carried through the wet months means a great deal less to clear when fire season comes around again. If you've got a few flies showing up on the inside of a sunny window this month, they probably aren't breeding in your house. 🌤️

Cluster flies spend their early life outdoors, where the larvae develop on earthworms in the soil. Come fall, the adults look for somewhere sheltered to wait out winter, and the gaps around window frames, siding seams, and attic vents are exactly the kind of space they're after. Once a group settles into a wall void, a warm afternoon heats the glass nearby and draws a few of them out into the room. That's why they turn up at the same south and west windows again and again, and why treating the glass doesn't change anything.

What does change is what happens outside. Right now, with nights cooling off while the afternoons stay warm, they're still working their way in. Sealing the gaps around frames, vents, and siding this month is worth more than anything you do indoors later.

Here's the belief that trips people up most often when they're moving into a place: "I'd know, because I'd have bites."

Reaction to bed bug bites varies a lot from person to person, and plenty of people show no visible reaction at all. That makes bites one of the least reliable things to go by. What's actually reliable is physical evidence, and it sits in predictable spots: the piping and seams of a mattress, the gaps in a bed frame where the rails meet the posts, the back of a headboard, and the carpet edge along the baseboard nearest the bed.

Most pest management plans for a restaurant are written around the building. In October, a lot of Northern California operators change the building.

Side curtains go up on the patio, the heaters come out, and a space that was fully exterior in August becomes a warm, partly enclosed room with seating, food debris and soft furnishings in it. The pest pressure moves with it. Vinyl panels create dead air and condensation along the base, heaters hold a microclimate well above the outside night temperature, and the patio door gets propped more often than anyone will admit on a busy service.

None of that is a problem on its own. It becomes one when the plan on file still treats the patio as outdoors. The practical step is walking the enclosure once it's up, so the service points, the door sweeps and the sanitation touchpoints match how the space is actually being used for the next five months.

If you bought your house this year, this is your first October in it, and you have no baseline yet for what it is supposed to sound like at 10pm.

So here is one to file away. That chirping in the garage is almost always a single cricket. Only the males call, they are built to be heard from a long way off, and one of them in a mostly empty garage with concrete and drywall to bounce off sounds like a crowd. Crickets also do badly indoors. Nothing is setting up shop in there. One wandered in and now it is stuck.

The part worth your attention is not the cricket. It is how it got in. Most often it is the rubber seal along the bottom of the garage door, which goes brittle and pulls away at the corners, or the threshold where the slab meets the driveway. Easy way to check: stand inside with the door shut and the lights off in the evening. If you can see a line of daylight along the bottom, there is your answer, and it is the same opening everything else is using.

There is about four inches of space under a rooftop solar array, and it is warm, dry, and completely out of the weather. Pigeons and starlings work that out long before we do.

Most homeowners never look up there. The first sign is usually debris in the gutter or a stain down the fascia, and by then material has been building under the panels for a while.

Before the rains start is the right time to deal with it. Once that material is soaked it packs into the roof drainage path, and clearing it becomes a much bigger job.

If you run facilities for a school district or a licensed child care center in California, Healthy Schools Act paperwork is a fall problem even though the deadline lands in winter.

The requirements themselves are specific. An IPM plan published on your site or district website. An annual written notification to parents, guardians and staff listing the pesticides you expect to apply during the year. A registry so anyone who asks gets 72 hours notice before an individual application. Warning signs posted in the treatment area 24 hours before and left up for 72 hours after. Application records kept for four years. And an annual pesticide use report filed with the Department of Pesticide Regulation by January 30 covering the prior year.

One detail worth knowing, because it changes the workload. That annual report covers applications made by your own personnel. Work performed by a licensed pest management company is reported through that company instead. For a lot of sites, that alone is the difference between a clean filing and a scramble.

The argument for looking at this in October is not the calendar, it is accuracy. Reconstructing a year of application records in the last week of January is how errors get introduced. Pulling them together now, while the people who did the work are still on staff and remember the details, is not.

Here is one that catches people every October. You pull the wool sweaters out, find small holes that were not there in May, and blame moths.

Most of the time in a Northern California home, it is not a moth. It is carpet beetle larvae, and they leave a different calling card. Clothes moth larvae spin silk, so you find webbing and little tubes. Carpet beetles leave tiny bristly cast skins and no webbing at all. That one detail tells you which pest you actually have, and the two are not handled the same way.

The other half of the myth is the cedar block. Cedar oil only does anything at a concentration a sealed container can hold, and an open closet loses it within weeks. Mothballs have the same problem, plus they are a pesticide and belong nowhere near a room you sleep in. What actually works is less interesting: vacuum the closet floor edges, under the dresser, and along the baseboards where lint and pet hair collect, because that is what the larvae are really feeding on. Then store clean wool sealed. 🧶
