We are starting some mammoth and other giant sunflowers this year to shade the berries on our trellis Archway that leads into the garden. There’s always so much joy when I see a new sprouts pushing up out of the dirt. I love this time of year!

We moved into a new place almost a year ago now. We’ve been making a lot of changes around the house and yard to make it more ours.

Today we started to reclaim some of the back lawn and transform it into a little more of an edible landscape with this white nectarine tree.

We have plans to bring the border of the lawn in about 4 or 5 feet on one side. Plant a few more fruit trees. Heavily mulch the area and plant an understory below the trees of flowers and other edible shrubs.

It’s going to take a while to get where we want it to be, but once it’s finished we’ll have less lawn to mow and water and more food security right in our backyard.

ZINNIA UPDATE!

The bees and butterflies are loving the zinnia bed we planted. Now that it is in full bloom we regularly see 5 to 10 different pollinators enjoying these beauties.

Zinnia update: The colors are poppin’ up in here! I love how vibrant these flowers are. AND the stand zinnias are seeming to max out on their height, but it looks like the giant zinnias are still going giving the whole planter a nice dimension.

Our side-yard nursery is starting to really come to life! We’ve got some Shasta Daisies that we planted last year that are staring to bloom, some echinacea coming in really nicely, and if you look really closely you can see our little gnome Benjamin overseeing it all. He does look a little camera shy though.

These giant zinnias are HA-PPY! Can’t for all the color to come in! Also-meet Simon our garden spider. I’m wondering if our zinnias are so happy because he’s our natural pest control guy keeping all the buggies who want to devour these delicious looking leaves away. Thanks Simon! 🕸
