2NS Sand: These are pictures of 2NS sand from different gravel pits in Michigan from the east side to the west side. Some piles are very rocky and gritty and some are finer. These are all classified as 2NS. Why is there such a difference… because MDOT puts out a scale and as long as the sand falls in that scale it can be called : 2NS. This is the same concept for all types of sand. Some 2NS you do not want to ride on. It’s almost like riding on marbles. No stability. It is also very dusty. Why? Because 2NS is designed to build things such as septic fields. It’s meant to drain. Hold no moisture. Moisture gives stability. Keep in mind: gravel pits mine out of different areas. So what sand they have this month may be different next. That is why MOST gravel pits test their sand every 2 weeks. The solution: use sand based on their sand test report and use more than 1 kind of sand to get the benefits from the different types of sand. Keep in mind different riding disciplines want a different type of sand. A Reiner wants a sand with give, a barrel racer wants a sand with grip. SAND IS A SCIENCE. Most gravel pits have quality control labs for this reason. Ask questions, pull test reports, educate yourself. Footing is so important for the longevity of our horse’s joints. Keep that in mind!
