Friendly reminder...again ..! It's going to get below zero the next couple days with wind chills that can freeze your water lines if they are not protected from the cold and winds! I've had many calls from the last cold spell where the water was left dripping and still froze. In this extreme cold a drip isn't enough. Trickle your water (a stream the size of a pencil lead) at all locations and include the hot water side too! Hot water lines freeze first unless they are active. Your water bill and heating bill for the hot water side may go up.. But far less expensive than repairing broken water lines, not to mention the inconvenience of no water!

With the Spring rains upon us (albeit a bit late) remember to check the operation of your sump pumps. Make sure there is no debris in the pit (it can disrupt the operation of the float switch) and remove any buildup of soil, calcium, lime or slime on the float. Depending on the amount of use you should consider replacing your pump every 7 years. Much cheaper to replace a pump than to flood your basement and then require a new water heater, furnace, carpet etc. You should also consider a backup pump if you don't have one in the event of a power outage. As Winter approaches remember to seal up your crawl spaces and watch for extreme temp drops. If you've had frozen pipes in the past, remember to let water trickle at faucets, open up cabinet doors to allow heat into those areas and make sure your foundation is sealed against the cold winds.

A friendly reminder! I want to remind everyone to disconnect your garden hoses from the hydrants and drain them. I want to be your plumber, but don't want you to have unnecessary plumbing bills.

During this scary time in our lives Porter Plumbing would like to assure its' customers that I'm taking extra precautions to avoid crowds and implementing the 6-foot rule and as I always have, I wash my hands after every job and limit touching surfaces. I'm also implementing a question to my customers before I enter a residence "Is or has anyone in this household sick or been sick in the last 2 weeks or been around anyone that is sick or has been sick?" This helps to keep me virus free. I have a lot of older customers to protect. Thanks for your support and understanding.

Spring has finally arrived. Check your sump pumps please. Pumps are good for an average of 6 to 7 years depending on frequency of use. A new pump and labor is typically far less than your deductible and can save a major headache from the loss or damage of your personal possessions.
