Time to get ready for winter. Disconnect hoses from outside water hydrants. Make sure crawlspace access holes are closed. When the temperatures drop, turn your heat on at least 65 degrees or warmer. You may not be there, but your house still needs heat. If you're going to be out of town, have someone checking your house. Keep tabs on the weather and when temperatures are going to drop, make sure you're ready. Things you can do to be proactive, open cabinet doors under sinks, turn a sink on to a pencil stream (a stream about the size of pencil lead), pipes are less likely to freeze with water movement in them, be sure to turn on the hot and cold. If you discover you have frozen pipes, contact someone asap to get it thawed. Sometimes you can get it thawed before damage is done, or at least keep damage to a minimum. With winter right around the corner, please stay safe and warm.

Weather is about to get extreme, please make sure you're ready. Double check those hoses on the outside hydrants are disconnected one last time. When the temperature drops below 20 to 25 degrees outside, turn your faucets on a small pencil stream - do a combination of the hot and cold water. By doing this, water moving through your pipes, helps keeping it from freezing. You can also open up the cabinet doors below the faucets and you can even point a space heater under there too. If you discover a faucet freezing up, sometimes you can run your blow dryer into the holes going into the floor or wall. If the freezing is nearby it might thaw it. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to call a plumber asap. If it can be caught fast enough, sometimes it can be thawed before damage is done, if not repairs can be costly. And remember if they're thawing those pipes, they have a very expensive heater there, along with the manpower, the truck to bring it there and all the overhead that goes along with having a business. Please stay safe and warm.

As the temperature gets cooler, please make sure your hoses are unhooked from all outside hydrants. If you don't, it could freeze inside it and cause it to split/crack causing a water leak. Yes, water leaks can be fixed, but can be very costly and why have to spend your money on that... save it for something fun.

BEWARE!!! Extreme weather is coming this week! Anytime the weather is going to drop below 20 degrees you'll want to turn a faucet on a small pencil stream (a small constant stream). If you have one on the north or exterior wall, that would be the best one to turn on. Be very vigilant to check your faucets often and let your landlord know asap. Sometimes if you can catch it early on, the damage is minimal. If you don't notify your landlord and the damage is extensive, you could without water for a while. Now is a good time to change that furnace filter and make sure the low battery light isn't on on your thermostat. If you loose heat, you'll need to report that asap too. As cold as it's going to be, your house will get very cold very fast!!!
