Let's go "Behind the Design" today! This home was previously owned by the homeowner's father, and he had some flood lights shining down on the creek and waterfalls. When meeting with them, they expressed the desire to have that aspect added to the design, but with proper fixtures installed instead of flood lights. These are the little details that we love to hear when working on a design for our customers! This is just one example showing how outdoor lighting is more than just placing fixtures to light up areas. It can be an emotional connection that brings together memories, nature, and the quality of your life spent around the home.

An overlooked feature when designing an outdoor lighting system is focusing how your property/landscaping looks from the inside of your home. It's easy to stay focused on how the home looks while viewing it from the outside, and there is nothing wrong with that. But when you are inside of your home and you look out of the windows at night, you are essentially looking at a black mirror with your reflection staring back at you. A thoughtfully designed lighting system will turn those black mirrors into paintings!

How you use the entrances to your home is important when creating a lighting design. On this home, they use this entrance the most, as opposed to the front door. Knowing that information allowed us to create a design that naturally guides your eyes through the entire design, while eventually ending at this entrance. What we don't want is for you to look at a lighting design and not know where to focus your attention. Having a design that naturally guides your eyes, while approaching the property, is essential to providing a great design for our customers! When designing a job, we join with our client, and we all become painters of light!

We love when a new homeowner, who has moved into a home with our lighting system already installed, is excited about their new outdoor lighting system! This picture is an example of just that! We met with the new homeowners of this job to introduce ourselves, we discussed the design and walked the property with them, we reviewed our maintenance process, and we discussed possible design changes based on how they spend their time outside, because everyone uses their outdoor areas differently. We are honored to help another family become painters of light!

Why use path lights to illuminate your sidewalk when you can place a fixture in the tree! It is more cost effective because you are using fewer fixtures, and it provides a more intimate scene with a moonlighting effect. This is an example of a detail that can often be overlooked when designing an outdoor lighting system.

One of the benefits to outdoor lighting is illuminating unique features on your property. Who says you can only enjoy those features during the day? This tree was just a black space on the property at night. We added a couple of fixtures under the surface of the ground, which hid the fixtures from view. By illuminating this tree, it provided depth to the property, while also highlighting one of the most unique trees we have seen at a job.

It's all about what YOU want! This homeowner asked for something simple, but they also wanted some darkness for added privacy. We decided to hang pendant lights above each table, providing an intimate setting for these homeowners and their guests. As the warm weather is approaching, think about how you want to spend your time at home this year!
