National Safety Month Spotlight: Working Around Heavy Equipment

Commercial construction sites depend on cranes, excavators, forklifts, loaders, and other heavy equipment to keep projects moving safely and efficiently. Lewis Contractors emphasizes operator awareness, spotter communication, controlled access zones, and clear site logistics to help protect workers on active jobsites.

Safe coordination between equipment operators and field personnel is essential to preventing struck-by incidents and maintaining a safe work environment.

Planning, communication, and awareness make all the difference.

National Safety Month Spotlight: Personal Protective Equipment

Hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility vests, hearing protection, and proper footwear are essential tools on every commercial construction site. As well, special tasks require special protective equipment, such as respirators, harnesses, and the like. At Lewis Contractors, PPE is more than a requirement — it’s part of creating a culture where safety comes first.

The right equipment, properly worn and consistently enforced, helps protect workers from preventable injuries every day.

Safety starts before the work begins.

National Safety Month Spotlight: Fall Protection

Falls remain one of the leading hazards in commercial construction, making fall protection a critical part of every project. Lewis Contractors emphasizes proper guardrails, tie-off procedures, ladder safety, aerial lift training, and ongoing site awareness to help protect workers at elevated heights.

From structural steel to roofing and interior fit-outs, safe access and fall prevention are essential on every jobsite.

Every worker deserves to go home safely at the end of the day.

On National Higher Education Day, Lewis Contractors proudly celebrates the colleges and universities that shape the next generation of leaders, innovators, and skilled professionals.

For decades, Lewis has partnered with higher education institutions across Maryland to create inspiring, functional, and future-focused learning environments. From historic campus restorations to advanced science and academic facilities, we are honored to help build spaces where students and faculty thrive.

We are especially excited to be part of transformative projects like the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) Wellness and Athletics Center, and the Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) Knott Science Center, each providing critical upgrades to the campus experience.

At Lewis Contractors, education construction is about more than buildings—it’s about investing in communities, opportunity, and the future of Maryland.

Today is World Environment Day, we celebrate the importance of building stronger communities while protecting the environment for future generations.

At Lewis Contractors, sustainability is more than a goal — it is part of how we build every day. From historic restoration and adaptive reuse projects that preserve existing structures and reduce material waste, to environmentally conscious construction practices, Lewis remains committed to minimizing the environmental impact of construction.

Projects such as the Chesapeake Conservancy Earl Conservation Center and numerous historic preservation and adaptive reuse efforts throughout Maryland reflect our focus on sustainable building solutions that extend the life of important community spaces while reducing unnecessary environmental impact. Additionally, Lewis is proud to have built the Parks and People Foundation’s sustainable headquarters, which incorporates advanced sustainable design practices and features a green roof terrace, rainwater collection cisterns, geothermal well storage systems, solar hot water system, use of reclaimed and rapidly renewable finish materials, and an efficient rain screen-building envelope that uses a non-chemically treated wood product for both cladding and solar shading.

On World Environment Day 2026, we are proud to continue building responsibly, preserving resources, and creating lasting value for our communities and the environment.

National Safety Month Spotlight: Electrical Safety

Commercial construction sites require constant awareness around temporary power, energized equipment, and active electrical systems. At Lewis Contractors, electrical safety starts with planning, communication, proper lockout/tagout procedures, and maintaining safe clearances around energized work areas.

Daily coordination between trades helps reduce risk and keeps everyone working safely on site.

Safety is never accidental — especially when working around electricity.
