A leaning retaining wall doesn’t automatically need a full rebuild. Before deciding what to do, find out why it’s moving.

Trapped water behind the wall, often from poor drainage or saturated backfill, is a common cause. Frost may contribute, but rebuilding without correcting the drainage can mean facing the same problem again.

As freeze-thaw weather sets in, look for three clues:
• Does movement stop, or keep progressing through the next few cycles?
• Is water escaping near the base after rain or snowmelt?
• Is the movement limited to the caps or top courses, or is the whole wall bulging?

A shifted top course is a different repair than a wall bowing from the base. If the base and drainage are sound, stabilization or a partial rebuild may be possible. If the base has failed, a full rebuild may be the right solution. The answer starts with a site assessment, not a guess.
