The “tide wall” at Big Sur is a headboard comprised of 52 walnut slats, each shaped by the undulations of one week’s tides from the Pacific Ocean below. Carving the organic ebbs and flows of the tides into the wood reveals the unique grain of each piece. Together, they catch the evening glow, creating a spectacular light show that feels like the sun shimmering on the waves.

The warmth of oak and beech define the kitchen, where three islands reflect the tapered geometry of the house, narrowing as they touch the floor. As they float on minimal touch points, the kitchen islands echo the small outcroppings of rock visible in the water off the coast.

We settle into our understanding of a place by returning to it again and again with careful observation and sketches. The cliffs at Big Sur provide an endless source of inspiration, from dramatically angled forms to layered patterns of sedimentary rock. We channeled these elements into the stone walls of the house to echo the formation of the surrounding landforms.

Appearing to merge with the expanse of the Pacific Ocean, the pool at Big Sur House echoes the rocky tide pools below, heightening the incomparable sensation of living on the land’s edge.

An intimate study of the landscape at revealed the remarkable features that make the site unique. A dilapidated drainage became an opportunity for rehabilitation of a dormant ecosystem and a majestic blue Oak tree became the central organizing element around which the house was designed.
