Safety tips for portable generators.
Portable generators are an economical way to provide backup power during power outages, they are also one of the leading causes of loss of life during power outages. Each year, in the US, nearly 1000 people die using portable generators during power outages. The leading cause of these fatalities are Carbon monoxide poisoning, electrocution and fire related.
Here are some requirements for portable generator connections to your home.
1) All alternate portable power sources, ie: portable generators, require an isolation control panel with circuit breakers to control each circuit powered by the generator.
2) Portable generators are required to supply output voltage to the isolation control panel through a rated, UL listed power inlet that is permanently attached to your home or structure.
3) Main overcurrent protection device cannot exceed the ampacity of the portable generator system, power inlet and output capability of the portable generator being utilized
4) Back feeding or plugging an extension cord from generator to electrical outlets is illegal and creates a life safety and fire hazard condition which contributes to many fatalities.
5) Portable generators should never be run inside a garage, even with the door opened.
6) Portable generators should never be ran in/under or near carports, lean Too's, porches, windows, doors of the home etc.
7) Portable generators should never be re-fueled while running.
8) Portable generators should never be running before connecting power cord to power inlets.
9)Always connect the power cord to the power inlet, turn off breakers in the isolation control panel before starting your portable generator.
10) Never store gasoline containers near your portable generator, inside of buildings or near your home when utilizing a portable generator for backup power.
11) Make sure you have carbon monoxide detectors inside your home if you use a portable generator system.
