Damage caused by severe weather brings out the best in most people and it is very true of our neighbors in Paris. However, some see it exclusively as a chance to make money.
If youâve experienced damage to your home or business, please consider the ways the staff of the Building Safety Department of the City of Paris can help you.
Require any contractor you consider hiring to show you their permit, issued specifically for your address, before allowing them to start any work. The City of Paris may be able to offer reduced waived permit fees for work caused by severe weather.
UPDATE - permit fees will be waived for repair work related to storm damage.
Having a permit comes with benefits like:
Permitted work will be inspected by trained and licensed City of Paris staff to ensure it meets nationally accepted quality standards.
It helps with insurance claims - insurers can deny claims if a permit was required by code and you didn't have one.
It deters fly-by-night contractors. Anyone who pushes you to agree and start work quickly, often requiring upfront cash payments, is likely not working in your best interest. Asking for a permit helps expose bad actors because legitimate contractors know the processes and codes and follow them.
It protects the value of your property. Real estate professionals and individuals often request permit history from the City of Paris for properties before a sale is finalized.
Donât just take their word for it. Ask to see and review the permit BEFORE any work begins. The Building Safety Department staff members are happy to verify any permit for you by phone or in person.
